ETA: DS (4) Lost weight....How much food is too much? (4 year old)

ETA:
Okay - DS changed schools about 3 months ago. At his old school they had a bagel/muffin/roll for breakfast and afternoon snack if they didn't bring in a home snack.

I weighed DS last night before his bath (same time I usually weigh him) and he lost 3 pounds.

Its not that he grew and looks thinner - he LOST 3 pounds. He was 44, now 41. Same scale.

Do you think that's its something to be concerned about or just the change in diet/carbs? His new school has more of a "snack" food - which he sometimes doesn't eat - he eats the pretzels but not yogurt and peaches.

He has not been sick, tired, lathargic, no change in sleep, no change in bathroom.

Original Post:

DS eats A LOT of food. Most if it is healthy. He had a good portion of food for dinner. He already had a package of fruit snacks and is looking for more food. I told him to take a drink b/c sometimes when you think you are hungry you are thirsty.
For breakfast he has 1 egg with cheese and some Canadian bacon, a waffle and some grapes. He doesn't eat his morning snack in school most mornings. He eats well in school per his teacher. I don't know where he puts it all.

He's a healthy weight for his height. The docs have never been concerned about the ratio.

I'm divorced and DS says he doesn't eat as much at his Dad's house. I don't know if I should feed him. He's asking for healthy snacks. If I don't give him a snack, I'm sure he'll wake up in the middle of the night.

My nephew was here for a few days. I think he ate as much in the 4 days he was here as DS ate in one day.

How much does your 4/5 year old boys eat?

DS is 5 and what your son is eating seems normal to me for my son. My son is in the 50% for weight these days but he can eat. Breakfast is two bowls of cereal or 5-8 home made pancakes or 3 blueberry waffles. One glass of juice, one glass of milk and a glass of water.

Lunch is usually a sandwich a snack pack, a juice box and a piece of fruit.

Snack after school is water and fruit or pretzels and cheese.

Dinner is usually meat, chicken or fish, a side like a potato, risotto, or pasta, and a vegetable. Tonight we had lamb chops and he ate 3 of them. HTH

It does. I really don't want him to have an issue when he grows up with his weight. Plus, when you compare how little my nephew ate, it makes it seem like DS is eating that much more.

Thanks LIF'ers!

Re: How much food is too much? (4 year old)

i dont have a son, but my daughter amazes me with how much she eats!!!
she can eat more than me sometimes. its all healthy foods though; veggies & fruits mostly. her school lunch is always veggies, fruits, cheese, yogurt and crackers.
i dont force her to eat if shes full after meals, but if she dosent eat enough its there waiting for her when she is hungry.
with out how much she eats i am surprised she dosent weigh so much more...shes 5 the beg. of Jan and is between 39-40lbs and struggles to put on a lb at this point it seems.
if hes healthy let him eat!!! as long as its not junk food there is no harm in it :)

This.. AJ eats a TON! Its crazy. She ate two servings of veggies last night (broc, cauliflower, carrots), 6 nuggests, pasta as a side, then a whole apple (a BIG apple) which is all after the crackers and grapes she had when she got home. *I* couldn't eat all that!

But she's a light weight at 35lbs.

Growth spurt?

He eats like this a lot - maybe a little more yesterday then usual. I told him if he grows he has to grow wider b/c his pants are too wide and he doesn't want to wear jeans/pants - only sweats/wind pants.

He had his usual breakfast this morning (egg/waffle/grapes) and he said, "It wasn't that much, just three things". Chat Icon

I actually think it's a good thing as long as they are eating all healthy stuff! My DS eats like a grown adult and is fit and thin. He eats all healthy, organic stuff so I don't see there ever being an issue with it being too much! He actually eats as much or more than you describe at every meal and people are always commenting how "well/much" he eats. My DS is super healthy! I would only be concerned if they are eating junky foods or if they are overweight or not very active. HTH!

I personally would be a little concerned about a three pound weight loss if there was no height increase. I'd probably call the Dr's office to see what they thought.

I too would be concerned. My daughter lost 3 lbs at 4 years old(despite eating a ton of food) and it was very alarming. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Her first sign was those 3 lbs lost. I would personally get a check up done to rule out anything.
