UPDATED -Can I give my 3yo an adult dose of antibiotic for conjunctivitis?
Let me preface that I am usually adamantly against taking other people's medicine...
Long story short, DH has pinkeye and he's taking drops for the infection.
DS woke up from his nap just now with bright pink eye and crusties. Called ped's office but emergency number isn't working.
Instead of waiting until Monday, can we put one drop of DH's antibiotics in his eyes?
Tia
--Didn't do it. I'm a stickler about medicine, always throw it out past its expiration date, don't let DH take anything of mine if he's feeling ill, etc. I checked with my mom (a nurse) and she looked up the dosing/concentration of that particular drug. The indications said it could be given to a 1yo but it still didn't feel right. I gave him warm compresses and wiped it gently through the night. Next morning, DS's eye was back to normal. Phew. Thanks for everyone's input, though =)

go to a PM Pediatric place. I would not give your DH meds to your son.

PM pediatrics is open until midnight...in and out...I'd go tonight rather than wait until the morning when the eye could be completely crusted closed

DS woke up with pink eye on Monday. I called the ped, and they called in the prescription right to CVS. Saved me the office visit.

i am pretty sure the tobramycin does is the same, is that what your DH has?
eta: we were in pink eye hell here last week. my DH had a very bad case, led to a severe corneal abrasion that he is still dealing with. my DS woke up last sunday with a red crusty eye and i called the doc and they called in drops and they were the same exact ones DH was originally given

No way..I would not. I know this may be crazy...but I have heard of people treating their kids with a wet tea bag..you boil water..let the tea bag soak...then cool it off and do light compresses on the eye..not really sure what the reasoning is..but I know someone who swears by it for her lo's..

No way! I would never. I am like a super neurotic crazy person when it comes to meds for DS.

I have done this for styes and a newly forming case of conjunctivitis. My.eye Dr says it has something to do with the acid in the tea.
Personally, no I would not treat child with an adult medication at all. I would have gone to PM pediatrics (or a similar first med type of place)
I'd also he a little annoyed my pediatricians emergency line wasn't working.
Hope your DS is better soon, your DH too!!

Never do this. You cannot be sure that is what a child should or would take.

Re: Can I give my 3yo an adult dose of antibiotic for conjunctivitis?
No! Not only would it be the wrong dose but it also could pass the germs. PM peds is great and so much better than the ER. I have used them a few times when my girls were sick and didn't want to wait until Monday for an ear check or strep culture.

Re: Can I give my 3yo an adult dose of antibiotic for conjunctivitis?
No, this is a bad idea all around.
1st) A child should never take an adult dose of anything. (and as you said, no one should ever take anyone else's prescribed medication)
2nd) Many cases of conjunctivitis are not caused by bacteria, so antibiotics would not work for it and would again contribute to bacterial resistance. You need to determine what is causing it so you can treat it properly.
ETA: If you son caught it from your DH is is most likely viral, as viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious. So antibiotics will not work. It just has to run its course.
