Re: On the front page of today's NYT
I don't know how I feel about this. I mean, I'd be glad to be chosen because we have no IVF coverage, but it seems a little strange to me.
Tell me your story and if we find you are worth it, sad and or entertaining, here ya go! With balloons like publishers clearinghouse?
I don't know. I think if they want to give away a free IVF to someone for the sake of helping, then yes, I think it's wonderful. But this.. It makes me feel a little icky.

Re: On the front page of today's NYT
I don't think this is a bad thing, people need to calm dowm, if someone could get the help they need that they could not normally afford who cares if it is for marketing purposes or not.
Good or bad idk, infertility is a big bussiness and I think That could only help us a patients. The basics of supply and demand, if both clinic A and clinic B are both going to give me excellent service but clinic A is 25% cheaper i am going to use them. When there is a choice and the clinics are trying to make money they are going to fight to give me the best service at the lowest price.
And comparing it to raffling off chemotherapy or an MRI is silly, while IVF should be looked at as necessary, it is not life or death and usually not as time sensitive.

Re: On the front page of today's NYT
This was so awful:
"What is wrong with our society? Seriously. Forget about politics or religion- the I.V.F. route, whether free or not, is SICK. We are now skating very close to the edge of no return from an ethical and moral standpoint. Someone in the piece is quoted as saying that "It's not like they are raffling off a baby." What really is the difference? Someone else asked if raffling off chemotherapy would be considered out of bounds. Here's the difference-- chemotherapy is widely considered to be the best way to rid the body of certain cancers. Cancer is an illness. And in this country, where health care is anything but free, winning chemotherapy would be a godsend to millions of people. Infertility, by contrast, is not an urgent medical issue. It cannot kill you. I don't understand the people of my generation so eagerly welcoming the concept of artificial conception. Why can't these people adopt or get hobbies? Why can't they use the money they would spend on I.V.F. to better educate themselves and travel? The willingness of American women to subject themselves to these types of "treatments" is horrifying. Do they think injecting themselves with hormones is not doing damage to their bodies? There are more important things in life than reproducing-- particularly when the world is in the throes of a population explosion. I'm sorry but these raffles and I.V.F. itself should not be allowed. Conception is not a right. I'm really sad for the future after reading this article."
Omg, it made my stomach twist.
ETA: and 5 people "recommend" it.

Re: On the front page of today's NYT
as someone who had to pay 100% of out pocket, including meds nearing $15,000 i think the idea of FREE IVF is fantastic. HOWEVER, for the doctors of LI IVF (where i am actually a patient) to ask hormonal, emotionally damaged women to cry their eyes out expressing why the most deserve to win a free round of IIVF is absolutely disgusting. they should be ashamed of themselves. an anonymous raffle would have been sufficient.

It's not up to the infertiles to "save the world" and solve overpopulation. We have just as much a right to reproduce as anyone else!
As for my thoughts on the actual article... I don't see the problem. However, I think something like this should be a random drawing rather than someone's opinion of who wins for the most deserving, compelling experiences.
eta: It makes sense to me that someone who has a very compelling story should win, but I am SURE there are MANNNNNNNY women with VERRRRRY sad stories .. I just don't know how they came across choosing who they did. It's all so subjective.

I agree with you 100%
That's my issue with the whole thing. It's hard enough, but to have to try and prove yourself worthy?? Disgusting.
Anonymus raffle would be a much better way of doing this. I would respect that much more.
As for the comments on the article. I am not surprised. There are more people like that around then you think. They hide behind their computers to say how they really feel and then smile in your face when you see them in the street.
People are assholes

I agree with you...I hate that they wanted women to do this and they judged them...I wish they did it anonymously...but its great that they did offer IVF to someone who could not afford it otherwise

Re: On the front page of today's NYT
Wow, talk about exploiting a sitution. Shame on any clinic that encourages vulnerable women to make videos of themselves crying over their infertility.
How about this: Don't be so greedy and lower your prices all around so that IVF is more affordable to people instead of making them play silly games.
And can't even comment on the comments.
