social worker before IVF??
I spoke with my RE's office this morning...they said that before we start the IVF process, we have to meet with a social worker. Anyone know what that's all about???

Not sure about a social worker, but DH and I had to meet with a psychologist before starting IVF.

We never had to do this, but I have heard of people meeting with a psychiatrist beforehand.

social worker before IVF??
I think it's nice to offer that but I've never heard it as a requirement. We went straight to IVF (never did IUI) after our diagnosis of MFI and there was no mention of a Social Worker. My RE's office does have IVF support groups and gave us the contact information, but never made us do anything.
IVF is invasive and emotional so I guess your clinic wants to ensure you know what you're getting into.

we are patients at LI IVF and they require this. ($140.. just put it on my tab!!  )
we just met with a social worker saturday morning. i was very nervous about it and while i was there i felt like i was starring in a really bad lifetime movie. i couldnt believe this was actually my life. but i have to say.. DH and i left there feeling so secure in our decision and overall just felt GOOD. i think it definitely helped us to talk about our feelings with an outsider. FM me if you need to talk or have any questions about it!

we met with harriet, maybe try calling her? we were kind of an emergency apt since we are planned to start next week. good luck!

We were patients at RSofNY and before we were able to start IUIs with them it was mandatory for us to see a psychologist.

Interesting. I've been at 4 different RE's (some of the ones mentioned here) and I have never had to see anyone before starting with them until I went the DE route. Which that I could understand because there are many more issues to deal with there. Its never a bad idea though, especially with DH. Sometimes they don't open up so much and when there is a 3rd neutral party in the room it is much easier to talk.
Though mostly these mandatory visits are just to make sure you are OK with everything. There's no pass/fail kind of thing. More the SW will ask you about how you feel, how you would tell your DC about how they were conceived etc.... and to see if you have any questions. They usually recommend some books to read and books to get to read with DC etc... And hope they take your insurance
