Since I'm new to this...question about pumping

I'm going to be a FTWM who plans to breastfeed. I'm going back to work after 6 weeks.

How often are you supposed to pump throughout the day? I'm concerned because I work 9-5 with an hour commute, so I'll be out of the house from 8-6.

I won't be able to pump at work.

Is that too long of a time? I'm worried that I won't be able to BF because I'm working FT. Chat Icon

To be successful at pumping and nursing, you definitely need to pump the milk when you are away from DC. It's all about supply and demand, so if there's not "demand" between 8-6 your body will think that the milk is not needed and there will be no "supply". Do you get breaks? Have a lunch hour? It's important to pump as often as baby would be eating, so expect every 2-3 hours, especially at the beginning.

Re: Since I'm new to this...question about pumping

Thank you for your response.

I might not be able to breast feed then....Chat Icon I can't pump at work.

Even if I have a break or lunch, there wouldn't be anywhere for me to go. I don't know if I'm having my own office/classroom this year. Even if I do, there is no privacy. I had my own classroom last year and the custodians just walk in when they need to clean.

I don't think I can ask my boss either. I work at a private, very conservative school. I feel like it would be looked down upon.

I guess there's nothing I can do Chat Icon

im pretty sure i was told it was a law (not sure if its a NYS or NYC law) that jobs must allow you to pump and provide you with private spaces to do so. It may have something to do with how large the company is, but there is definitely something out there. I would look into it before you give up on breastfeeding

edit - a quick search here is what i came up with - they definitely need to accommodate you. It doesnt matter how conservative the school is; this is your choice and if you want to do it you have every right to. I cannot image youre the first person that wants to pump at the school.

I think by law they have to provide you with a clean secure place to pump. I work at a public school and know that sometime things are done different than private, but I would look into a little more before getting to bummed.

I've heard its a law too. But I'm worried that it will be looked down upon and they won't hire me back for the next year....

Here is the law - private or public employer regardless of size:

If breastfeeding is important to you, I would talk to your employer before you go out on leave about how they can accommodate you...are you the first one to need this at your school?

Agreed. We have a pumping room at work and not one women has used it in years, its there because its the law.

I think you may want to ask other women that you work with if they've heard of it.

I'm not saying you want to do this but at my last company, I woman pumped in the bathroom. I witnessed her cleaning up once, it didn't bother me but I can see how it might bother the woman doing the pumping.

Thank you for the link!

I'm really not sure...I'm pretty new to the school. It's a Jewish school so I'm not sure about their feelings towards this (I'm not Jewish), which is why I'm so apprehensive about the whole thing.

Re: Since I'm new to this...question about pumping

You HAVE to BF at work in order for your supply to stay up...not pumping for 10 hours is not good.

If they dont hire you next year bc you want to breastfeed there would be some legal action there!

If you want to breastfeed, then do it. There are many obstacles in the way and many reasons to stop, but only you can overcome those obstacles. I worked at a job that is a straight 10 hour shift, no breaks, no place to pump but the bathroom, working with only men. I breastfed for a year. You can do it if you want to. There are also many ways you can breastfeed and supplement. I am here if you want encouragement. Chat Icon

i totally understand where you're coming from but ultimately, every religion BFs.

I'd try speaking with other co-workers there and getting a feel of how ti works, if you can. if not, speak with the boss.

it's totally illegal for the principal to judge you and not re-hire you based on BFing.

Re: Since I'm new to this...question about pumping

it shouldnt be looked down upon. its a natural thing and im sure there are women in that school who at one point or another BF their babies.
i would talk to them about it before leave and tell them that you are thinking of BF'ing and if you do, would there be a place for you to do it when you return to work and see what they say. they may surprise you!
should for whatever reason they cannot accomodate you, i personally would still do it for the 6 weeks you are home and i would probably still try and do it in the morning and at night til you dry up and supplement with formula. i know doing both isnt as good as just breast milk but i always felt that any kind of breast milk is better than none!

Regardless of relgion; by law they need to provide a space for you to pump. And it's not supposed to be in a bathroom. Now they don't have to pay you for this time.

Is there anytime during the day to fit in pumping? During your lunch break? There's got to be a way for educators to pump succesfully at work. is there a free period or anything?

Do you not get ANY breaks at all? Would going to your car at any point be allowed? You don't get a lunch break? While it wouldn't be the best situation ever, you can discreetly pump with a cover on in your car. I've pumped in moving cars before!

Thanks everyone Chat Icon

I do get breaks and have considered just doing it in my car covered up.

I'm going to wait and see what happens..I still have time. I just worry about things way in advance.

They'd have a major lawsuit on their hands if this was the reason for firing you. Pump away if you want to bf!

Re: Since I'm new to this...question about pumping

Why can't you pump at work? If you work in NY, your employer is legally required to give you time and space (not a bathroom) to pump. Schools have empty classrooms, offices, conference rooms, etc, so you should be fine.

eta: I'm Jewish, and while the Jewish religion doesn't have a lot to say about whether or not to BF, the school administration would have a massive discrimination suit on their hands if they fired you. People fought hard for to get working moms the right to pump; take advantage of it!
