Day Care Center vs Home Day Care

I was wondering if I could pick your brains on day care. I'm lucky enough to have my mom watch my 15M DS while my DH and I work full time. She loves it and would cring if she knew I were considering day care, but I'm thinking of it for social reasons, and to give her a break.

Other than an hour a week at the Little Gym and occasional play dates, he rarely around kids his own age. It's the complete opposite. He goes with my mom several days a week to visit my Gram in a nursing home. While he's the star of the show over there, my DH is worried about him being around so many old people all the time. I'm neutral on that.

I'm torn between looking at day care centers and day care run out of someone's home. Can you please share an insight? Why did you choose center vs home? Any recommendations in/near North Bellmore?

Thank you so much!!!

Day Care Center vs Home Day Care

I have DS at a center. I love it. I didn't feel safe with having him in someone's home. I also like that they always will have staff and never have to worry about a sitter being sick.

Day Care Center vs Home Day Care

DD isn't in day care, but I have been considering it. I personally would choose a day care center - I like the structure they provide. They are always with kids very close in age (as opposed to all the kids being together at an in home day care) and they do activities that are appropriate for that age group. I also feel like a day care center generally has more security and more staff. I feel like a center has a lot more for them to do - better "classes," better playgrounds and better things to play with.

Re: Day Care Center vs Home Day Care

we found an "in-between"

our son was at a tutor time and it just wasnt for us for many reasons.

we found in in-home, fully state licensed and insured daycare (with max 10 kids) and it has been AMAZING! 100% better than we could have imagined.

i think you just need to find what is right for you.

we wanted less children, more room to play, eat, sleep etc. more freedom with indoors/outdoors, water activities in the summer. we didn't want to have to fear constantly changing rooms and teachers.

ETA - also, a huge concern was illness. we thought less kids = less exposure = less sickness and it was true. DS' first year in daycare (at TT) he was CONSTANTLY sick, every other week. This past year, not a single illness. He didn't miss a single day due to illness.

We opted for a center. Originally I was leaning towards in home due to the fact there would be less kids and potentially less sickness but that ended up not working out which was a blessing in disguise for us.

I love our center. DS changes classes every six months and is with kids close in age to him.The setting and structure works well for him.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I have to start looking around and see what feels right.

Thanks again!

The above is also one of the reasons why we went with an in-home, fully state licensed and insured daycare.

Re: Day Care Center vs Home Day Care

DS goes to a center for the reasons listed by previous posters. but part of my issue was his age - he started daycare at 12 weeks old. an at-home daycare we looked at seemed wonderful, and they had a separate room w cribs for the babies. but she had mostly toddlers, and it wasn't clear how many adults supervised the kids at all times. and it worried me that the older kids would get all the attention and DS would be left in a swing for most of the day.

i liked that at the center, DS is in a room for babies around his level. i like that there are 2 girls in the room w him and the other babies, and that right outside the door there is a manager and an assistant manager, who oversee what's going on. i like that i get a daily report card sent home to me, so that i know exactly when he ate, slept, and pooped, and anything else he did. to us, a center feels right. but i agree that you have to do what works and feels best for your family.

good luck!

That's not necessarily true. It could be because he was exposed so much his first year his immunity was built up.

I only say this because my DS was sick like that for his first year - also in TT - but didn't miss a single day this year and he was still in TT.

I've had my kids in both and I liked them both for different reasons.

We started with an in-home day care which was great, but as my DD got older she grew bored and restless and she wasn't challeged being with children of all age groups so we switched to TT (she was there from 7 months old to just shy of 3). She did AMAZING in that setting but that's her personality. She needs structure and a challenge.

My son is more easy going and I think would have been fine in either place long term.

true, i guess ill never know why ... BUT ... he didn't get sick. thats all I care about.

my niece was in the same daycare 2 consecutive winters and was equally sick both winters - always with a runny nose and cough.

you have to admit that less exposure would have to correlate to less illness or at least it is reasonable to think so.

Day Care Center vs Home Day Care

Two more general questions if I may...

1. Is the cost about equal between center vs and in-home?

2. I'd like to start out slow. Do any have a 1-day a week option? I feel like of the few centers I've called, most require a minimum of 2 days a week.

Absolutely! And I agree, the why is irrelevant so long as your kid isn't sick.

My DD started in a small place (maybe 15 children at most) and got sick every 3 weeks her first winter, every other month her second. Once DS was born it was up to every 2 weeks. You can imagine my joy this winter when I got to save all my vacation days for VACATION!! Chat Icon

1. Not really. In home tends to be cheaper. Tutor Time is pretty expensive, although I'm in a different place now that is a legit day care center and the cost is comparable to my original in-home center, but still more expensive.

2. I don't know any place that has 1 day per week. I think there are laws about children sharing beds and such but I'm not 100% on that.

Day Care Center vs Home Day Care

I can't say how much in home costs but centers in the same area tend to be close in price.

My center took DS 2 days but many do not take infants part time so I was lucky. 2 days is usually the min for part time. Also I had a hard time finding a part time spot because they will take a full time kid over part time
