How long would you give the ped to call back before you call again?

Never had this issue before ped almost always answers the cell or calls back within 5 min and all friends that go to the practice say the same. I called at 7 so now it's been 50 minutes. It's not a horrible situation - my DD is having a high fever (104) from a shot. Just not sure when I wont be an annoying lunatic to call back?

ok editing my orignal posts. GET HIM TO PM PEDIATRICS. DIDN"T REALIZE IT WAS A PREVNAR SHOT.

Prevnar Side Effects
Although most children do not develop any side effects after being vaccinated with Prevnar, problems are possible. Some of the side effects that have been reported with the vaccine include decreased appetite, drowsiness, and irritability. While most side effects of the vaccine are mild, you should seek medical attention immediately if your child experiences seizures, a high fever, or an allergic reaction.

if your ped doesn't call back in a 1/2 hour I would re-call. If you can't get them with a fever like that after a shot I would go to the ER or at least pm peds.

I'd give it one hour. My dad and husband are both in peds. My dad does home call (he owns a practice) and he calls in for messages once an hour. If the mom lets them know it's very serious they'll call ASAP. When my husband picked up calls for private practices are a resident he had to call within 30 minutes.

Honestly, as a mom if I felt like I couldn't wait an hour for the dr to call me back I'd be on my way to the ER. It would be pretty serious for me if I could not wait an hour.

My peds line says if u.don't hear back within 1 hour to call back. I think sometimes the message doesn't get to them especially if it is after hours

The ped did call back about 30 min after I posted this. He didn't see the call for some reason. She is ok now but it got much worse. The fever spiked to 107 on the temporal thermometer 3 hrs after the aceteminophin and was shaking and it was very scary. Per the ped we are alternating tylenol and motrin every 3 hrs. Even with motrin her fever is over 103. He said this isn't a common reaction at all but he has seen it a few times and we just have to ride it out and keep the fever down as best we can.Chat Icon Thanks to all that responded to this thread and my other Chat Icon It's going to be a long night I fear Chat Icon

How old is she? Temporal thermometers are not accurate enough! Use a rectal one...If it went to 107 she should be in the hospital right now. Sounds like she also had a seizure if she was shaking. I would be in the ER right now and not listening to my dr on the phone. Sounds like he had a severe reaction to it!

Did you take her to the hospital? I know when Kaitlyn gets 104 (which is not unusual for her) that we are told 105 go straight to the ER. If I got 107 on the temporal what did the rectal say? I would have gone straight to the ER.

Re: How long would you give the ped to call back before you call again?

Thank you to everyone that responded! She is ok. We didn't go to the ER - spoke to the ped multiple times and the ped said that there was nothing they would do for her there since it was just a reaction to the shot. He had us start alternating acetiminophin and ibuprofin every 3 hrs and once we started doing that the fever has stayed around 101 sometimes lower. We did try to go longer in between when the fever was gone but, it went right back up to 105 so we are just sticking to the dosing schedule for now. She didn't have a seizure - the shaking was just her being cold as the fever came down from the meds. For now we are just riding this out. Of course, I am a complete, total wreck and Chat Icon Chat Icon the worst is over! Going to see the ped tmw either way! I can't believe this is happening from a shot! UGH Chat Icon
