Need Advice- about washing a gift
I received a beautifully hand-crocheted blanket for my DD. It also came with matching booties and a hat. Now obviously, everything needs to be washed before it touches the baby. But this blanket and accessories, they absolutely reek. It smells terrible. So I want to make sure it gets washed well. Now the only thing is that it is handmade, crocheted, has ribbon... and it seems so delicate. How do I wash something like this without it getting completely ruined? I would normally take it to a dry cleaners or something- but that is not baby friendly, right? So I feel like I'm stuck in between two concrete walls. Help me! Thanks in advance.

Re: Need Advice- about washing a gift
I've never handwashed before
What do I do?
Fill up the bathtub? Do I use hot, warm or cold water? Do I use the baby detergent, or just water? I feel so silly not knowing how to hand wash this...

If its not too big you could wash it in the bathroom sink, otherwise the tub should be fine. I normally use woolite to hand wash delicate sweaters, but I don't know if that has chemicals that could irritate the baby. Maybe baby detergent would be better. Be careful wringing it out to avoid getting it stretched out of shape. I think your supposed to lay it out flat on a large towel and them roll up the towel and blanket together so the towel can soak up the excess water. Then lay it flat to dry so it doesn't stretch. Handmade gifts are so thoughtful but it is impractical trying to wash them.

throw it in the gentle cycle, use baby detergent - stop the machine when it starts to wring it out and then lay it out flat
use cold water
i have also brought stuff to the dry cleaners and then just let it air out for a week or two before using it on DD

I would probably get one of those bags/laundry bags to wash delicate things and put it on a gentle cycle in the washing machine. GL!

and I would let it air dry ~ do not put in the dryer. Hang on a hanger or get a laundry rack to dry

I'd also use Free & Clear detergent (we use all) rather than Dreft or a baby detergent, just because the baby detergents have a LOT of fragrance in them. Odd because that can irritate them. But people just love that "baby scent" I guess.

Re: Need Advice- about washing a gift
Thanks everyone for the advice. It looks like I will have a lot of hand washing to do (or a lot of lingerie bags to buy for a delicate cycle). DH just told me his grandmother has commissioned someone to make us a blanket, and his cousin just FB-ed us and said she is knitting something and I already had a friend who has been working on some blankets and things... so it looks like a majority of our gifts will need special care!!
