Anyone live in the Tampa/St. Petes Area
If so what can you tell me about the area/schools etc?
I jut got a job offer and I am trying to decide if its worth moving or not. I will be making NY money down there but I am giving up a lot to make the move and I want to make sure its a good idea for my kids.
TIA

I don't live there but my mother's family does as well as one of my best friends.
My cousins lived in Clearwater but did not go to regular public schools---they were either enrolled in Magnet programs (2 went to magnet high schools) and the other went to a private school, Shorecrest High School.
However, my friend's husband grew up in Tampa (Harbour Island) and went to public school at Henry Plant HS. This is known to be a very good school. So I guess it would depend on where you would settle down there but yes, there are good areas and bad.

I have a friend in Tampa. All I know is that their Early Intervention program has been a horrible experience for her son who should be receiving services (I'm a SLP). I feel badly for her!

It really depends on where you are. The schools there go by county and some are bad and soem are good.....overall different than NY though.

Re: Anyone live in the Tampa/St. Petes Area
My husband and I moved to Tampa 3 years ago from LI to pursue my teaching career since I was having no luck in NY. I LOVE my school, the area, the school district, and everything about it. Hillsborough County is a great district, over 200 elementary schools (they go by county). Some areas are bad but there are lots of great areas too. Go to the Hillsborough County schools website, you can go to their website, click schools, and review the school grades. This will give you a lot of information. I work at an A school but it was luck of the draw. I was applying everywhere when I moved for a job. My school is great, the parents, the kids, the administration. I have a great group of coworkers, I teach 3rd grade. Lots of people my age, around 30, no kids yet. I am so lucky that it all worked out. Houses/costs are less here. Even though my pay is less then a teacher in NY, it evens out a bit with lower costs/no income tax. My husband is a realtor and the housing market is rebounding nicely here. If you need any information about moving or help in regards to a certain area, I can give you his contact information. I'd also be willing to talk or FM you. The only downside is that my family is all in NY. The flights are nonstop on Southwest going home, pretty reasonable, and the school calendar is different here (more time around holidays, week of thanksgiving off, 2 weeks at xmas) We drive up for the holidays/over the summer. Great areas with great schools are in South Tampa, some parts of North Tampa (Tampa Palms), and Wesley Chapel. Hope this helps you!
