so we shared the news with the in laws tonight, didn't quite go as planned!!
I'm 7 weeks along and we really haven't told ANYONE yet, I've only told 2 friends and my boss, that's it.....tonight we told the in laws and I just need to vent, it didn't exactly go as planned! lol
So DH has a very large family, he's 1 of 7 kids.....which is why we were originally going to tell DH's immediate family next Saturday on St. Patricks day, with the family all being together. But tonight we decided to tell my in laws over Sunday dinner (since DH's brother may not be around next weekend and he was over for dinner tonight). The only one I was worried about spilling the news to everyone else was my MIL but I swore her to secrecy until we got to tell the rest of the family next Saturday. Well, little did I know as I was giving her this speech, my father in law was off in the kitchen TEXTING ALL OF DH'S SIBLINGS THE NEWS!!! yes, the other 5 siblings (other than the one who was at dinner) found out via text from his dad instead of us telling them in person next weekend!! UGH!! Plus what had me more worried is my own sister doesn't even know yet and I was immediately concerned someone would go on Facebook to post a "congrats" or something. My father in law felt SO bad he said "oh well no one told me not to say anything" um that's because you walked out of the room while I was swearing my MIL to an oath of silence lol. UGH I guess everyone was going to find out sooner or later, but I really really wanted to tell them in person. I had a whole cute idea of how to spill the news, since we're getting together on St. Pat's for DH's niece's birthday party, I was going to put a note in the gift box that said "I'm going to be a cousin" so as she opened it she'd read it out loud. Oh well, so much for that!! Sorry this is so long, but thank you for reading all this if you did.....would you be annoyed? I feel like b/c my MIL is usually the one to do something like this and it's so out of character for my FIL I just can't be annoyed with him and it is sweet that he was so excited.....his text was something like "Mike finally did it.....she's pregnant" gee way to spread the news
I'm kind of blaming myself, I should've known better and just waited until next Saturday for anyone else who has a big family, learn from my mistake and wait until everyone's together!! lol

Oh no!! I learned that its got to be the second thing that comes out after we are having a baby.
Sorry that happened to you.
we had the same thing happen to us and this person wasnt even related to us. She literally got up from the table as soon as i said the words and went into the next room and non chalantly said "Oh, you know Fergies Pregnant"
You can still do something though. its your moment. claim it

awww that sucks!!! my first reaction was "why would he think they knew already??" lol not realizing he was purposely texting to give them the news! But then my after thought was that it was so sweet that he's so excited to be a grandparent again even though this will be their ELEVENTH grandkid!!! lol so it's nice they weren't like "gee that's nice, can you pass the sugar?" We called all the brothers & sisters after dad told us he sent a text just to make sure they didn't tell anyone else! They of course knew why we were calling!

That stinks! Just for that he owes you like a week of babysitting when the baby comes. At least you can swear your BILs to secrecy and you can look forward to all the people you still have to tell.

you're right b/c after tonight I started emailing some friends to make dinner plans so I can spread the news, I am just so worried about my husband's oldest brother, he has a big mouth and he is on facebook all the time!! I just hope my sister doesn't hear it from anyone else, I still plan on telling her & my mom next Saturday (I want to have both of them together). After they know I will be much more relieved and not as concerned about who else might spill! lol

Thats good so you had to tell them a bit earlier than you wanted but I am sure that they all were just as happy for you and DH as they would have been if you waited a week.
I got the "oh congrats" they werent as happy as I thought they would be cause they were so calm. Then 5 min later they let the cat out of the bag that the "outter" blurted it out before I walked in. How anti climatic. LOL oh well.

ugh!! at least if you know, act excited when you hear the news from the expectant parents!!! My sister and mom will be over for dinner on Saturday so as long as no one gets to them before then at least I'll get to surprise them!! and yes his brothers are all excited for us, at first I was worried they'd think that dad's text was how we WANTED them to find out lol but they realized what happened when we called. I joked with his dad that he saved me from the awkward belly gawking that so many seem to do after a pregnancy announcement (although I'm sure they'll be oogling at me on Saturday anyway! LOL). DH thinks I'm nuts but I already feel like my little bump is screaming "I'm pregnant!!" when it's probably really screaming "I love ice cream!!"

Oh no!!! Sorry the news announcement didn't go as planned. Some people just like to be the ones to break news!!! What a proud grandpa!! it's good you called them all to explain - I'm sure they'll all still be excited when you see them next weekend!
As our news was trickling out I disabled my Facebook wall so no one could write Congrats or anything until we had told everyone we wanted to tell first! Good thing I did b/c one of my mom's friends would have posted something but instead sent me a private message.

you have every right to be upset! I've been through similar situations with my parents and close friends. I didn't get crazy or get really mad but the truth is... it's no one's business to tell this news. And that should be a known fact of life. Couples want to share their expecting news themselves!!!

I'm so sorry that your announcement didn't go as planned. Your FIL was just so excited that he couldn't wait to share the news.
My mom spilled the beans to my uncle last week and he congratulated DH before we had any idea that we knew. I totally understand how annoyed you must be!

exactly, to me it was kind of common sense that you don't tell anyone else (especially at 7 weeks) unless the couple wants to tell others. Seeing how bad my FIL felt after he realized it was a no-no (the gasp from my MIL was enough to fully shame him lol)....I just downplayed it b/c I didn't want him to feel bad. But then it got worse when DH and I got home....he had the nerve to say to me "well I told you we should wait until Saturday to say something" UGH the nerve! What he actually said to me was "we can tell them whenever you want to, we just have to worry about my mom keeping a secret" lol....I was more annoyed that he almost insinuated this wouldn't have happened if *I* would have waited to give them the news, like somehow I'd know his dad of all people would spill the beans! lol It's so funny b/c when I tell my immediate family this weekend I know it will be the EXACT opposite of the chaos telling DH's family, calm cool & collected, such a difference from the large crazy family DH has

Re: so we shared the news with the in laws tonight, didn't quite go as planned!!
I'm sorry that happened to you! I'm sure your FIL was just so excited and didn't realize he wasn't supposed to share. It still must be frustrating though, especially since you had a cute plan to announce it.
DH and I have been worried about the same kind of thing happening. We're trying to orchestrate it so we get to all our close family and friends within a few days so there's less chance of people slipping. We're mostly worried about the news spreading on Facebook. I get how people get excited about a baby but I don't understand why some people feel the need to share other people's big news in a very public way I feel like it should be obvious that you don't spread news like hat until you're sure the parents to be have shared it with everyone first. But unfortunately some people just don't think. We plan to disable our facebook pages when we start telling people until we're able to share our news ourselves. Just keeping our fingers crossed that people respect our wishes to keep it to themselves until we're done sharing!
At least you still get to tell your side of the family. Enjoy that moment!
