if you are jewish...

Are you concerned that your name choices may be too "not jewish.?" I know that sounds stupid, but I am afraid of family reactions too. We need boy choices and I can't think of ANYTHING that I like other than Dylan (which DH hates and I don't understand!), Liam or Lucas. I am afraid Liam or Lucas would be hated by our families in fear that they sound too "not jewish." What do you think? FYI, we don't plan to tell the name choice until the baby is born. I don't mean to offend anyone in this post either- just want some objective opinions!

I'm Jewish and the thought has crossed my mind but I dont really care. There are only a few names I wouldnt choose out of respect for my regligion..such as Jesus (obviously pronounced with an H sound but still), I wouldnt choose Christian or Christina (with or without the h) and I think that's about it.

Obviously I don't know how your family is so it's different for everyone and also depending on the relationship that you have with them. In my case, my mom wont care- shell just be happy. My dad is a pita about everything so he will probally have a comment for me about my choice but I just dont care.

By the way, two of my choices for a boy are Liam or Lucas too...I am going with an L name since that part of the Jewish religion I am observing ...that when a person has passed, you name after their first letter especially if you were close to them. Im doing it for first and middle names.

That hasn't been a concern for me at all. DS is Harrison. We haven't decided on a name for #2, but we will use the letter "A" after my grandfather. Liam and Finn were on our very short boys list the first time around. I didn't really share the names on our list because I didn't want to hear anyone's opinion. I love the name we chose for DS and that was all that mattered.

I definitely understand your point. You just have to do what makes you comfortable. For us, we like names that sound "Jewish" or biblical, but that are still commonly heard in America. I like the name Lucas, but to me, it makes me think of Luke, in the New Testament, so I personally wouldn't use it. I have certainly known Jewish Lucases though, and have no problem with it...it's just our personal preference. I happen to love Grace as a middle name, but won't use it because it's more of Christian-sounding name, so I totally understand your concern.

ETA: Oh, and I totally get why you're concerned about family's reaction. I have heard many a, "that's a goyishe (not Jewish) name" from my mother over the yeras!

My family is Jewish, but I'm not practicing. DS's family is Catholic and he is not a practicing Catholic either. We went with names that were more European/Italian because that is our taste and it goes well with our last name.

I honestly did not even consider what my family would think They had their chance to name their kids
