Re: New Insurance and starting a new job...anyone have this happen?

them telling you that your insurance will be good as of 12/1 is normal - DH is a teacher and we were married in the summer, so he couldn't add me to his plan until sept - I had to go to the dr. in august and they told me to just use his card and have them re-bill it in september because when they put me in my active date would be our wedding date (july)

however it is strange that no one will provide you paperwork, etc at his new company. I assume its a large company since they have an HR department? Someone probably screwed up and now they are trying to cover their behinds.

good luck. It took forever to get DD added, but when they finally did they did cover all the bills. I would try to get in writing from his HR dept this info!

It sounds normal all except the part that they won't give you a letter to say that you have insurance as of 12/1 that seems a little fishy to me

Re: New Insurance and starting a new job...anyone have this happen?

I had this happen with one of my previous employers -- insurance coverage began 4/1 but my cards didn't come until two weeks later and I had a dermatology appointment. I was able to have the dr's office bill me and then after I got my insurance info, I asked them to re-submit with my date of coverage being 4/1. It was easily taken care of.

Then it also happened with the birth of our first DS -- DH's HR team had him listed/added at his DOB but the insurance company denied the first few claims and prescription fills. Turned out they had listed him as a SHE and because the records didn't match up, all claims were denied until it was straightened out.

I agree with the PP to get your DH's HR team/person to give you something in writing to confirm you are covered from 12/1, though. Better safe than sorry.

This happened to us... I ended up not getting my insurance card till June (we started as of April 1st). Sadly I kept just ignoring the bills till we got the card and then when we did they put it back through. I felt so bad because I was not paying but I had no choice and no money. The insurance gave us a letter that said it was retroactive when we got our cards.

Re: New Insurance and starting a new job...anyone have this happen?

When I worked in a doctor's office we had this happen all the time. A lot of people were able to get some kind of letter/form from their HR dept. proving the paperwork had been submitted to their insurance company though. As long as HR submitted everything in a timely fashion, the effective date should be backdated to 12/1. Each doctor's office is different in how they handle situations like these. Our office used to require the patient to self pay and once we got the verification that the insurance was effective, we'd bill the insurance and reimburse the patient once the claim was paid.

Re: New Insurance and starting a new job...anyone have this happen?

This just happened to me as we switched insurance to DH's plan as of 12/1 because I'm on maternity leave. We still haven't gotten our cards, and no money was taken out of DH's last check. Calling the insurance company on 12/10 got me nowhere - they said we're not in the system, so they couldn't give me any info. DH had to go to his HR department and they were able to access his plan. They gave him his ID number and everything he needed to give to my DD's doctors. The next day I was able to log onto the health insurance web site and print a copy of our cards. But still, a week later, we never received any documentation from them.

So go to your DH's HR or personnel department - they should have the info.
