Spinoff - Anyone have a basement not finished and prefer that?
I know so many people want to finish their basements. Just curious if anyone is like me and prefers it not finished, even if it has great potential (although we dont need the space and likely never will).
My basement does not flood but you just never know, so I prefer it to stay unfinished and never having to worry about dampness, mold, flooding, etc.
Anyone else?

Me, definitely! My unfinished basement is the perfect man-cave/workshop. I've got about a 600s/f workshop where I don't have to worry about sawdust. The other half of the unfinished basement has 6.5' ceilings, so it wouldn't really be a good finished basement. We use the other half for storage, weight room, and laundry.

I grew up in a house where we never had a finished basement. It was used for storage and my dads wood shop.
If I had a basement now I do not think it would be finihsed. Maybe make one room finsihed but not the entire thing.

My parents have an unfinished basement. The laundry is down there as well as my dad's workshop. There was plenty of space down there for us to play, draw with chalk on the walls etc. My dad says that it was a perfect place for us to play, and nothing was able to get broken.
We LOVED our unfinished basement when we were kids, we spent so much time down there.

My basement flooded or the first time in 30 years. Thankfully we didnt finish. I would rather put my $ somewhere that i dont have to cry in fear of every storm. It is good for storage, laundry, burner and water heater and crickets . It is also DH's place for tools, painting, breaking things. Stinky and dirty things get thrown down there also.

Most of my basement is unfinished and I love it that way. I like a work area I can mess up if I need to.
It is clean and neat and bright, but if I need to paint something or whatever I can with no issues.
We rode our bikes in my childhood basement when we were kids all winter long

That's a great idea to turn it into an indoor play area! Did your parents wall off the dangeorus parts like the boiler/furnace? I'm tempted to let my 3yo son go down during the winter for some supervised play but we have the boiler in the middle of the room so it may be dangerous if he plays near there.

we finished 1/3 of our basement as a media room when we moved in. We don't use it all anymore because the kids are older and it has become storage. I grew up in a house without a basement & I think hanging out underground is kind of gross I would like to finish the area my laundry machines are in, that would make me happy.

Re: Spinoff - Anyone have a basement not finished and prefer that?
For us a finished basement is a must. We have 3 kids so it helps give them a space for themselves and keeps the toy mess in one location. My kids love being able to go down and play. I don't fuss about the mess since I don't have to see it per se.
Also an unfinished basement freaks me out. I think freddy Kruger lives in all unfinished basements!

The boiler was near the workbench, we were told to stay away. Honestly, thinking back, it was dark back there so we never went near it.
The stairs come down into the middle of the basement, so we stayed in the front half of it. They put down old rugs on the floor so that if we fell, we weren't falling on cement. We had these huge foam blocks that we would make forts with, made hopscotch with chalk on the floor, etc. Even the neighboring kids we were friendly with came over to play in our basement. I have no idea how we entertained ourselves, but I remember spending so much time down there.
When we got older, my brother put up a dart board so we could play that (if the darts hit the concrete walls, at least they didn't damage sheetrock).
My parents recently pulled out my brother's old rocking horse for my kids to play on. Both kids spent ALL day downstairs playing with toys on Thanksgiving (with supervision of course). They had a ball!

Re: Spinoff - Anyone have a basement not finished and prefer that?
My in-laws actually un-finished their previously finshed basement. They said it was divided up in to several small poorly done rooms, so they tore it down.
They prefer it open, and they use it for laundry, storage, workshop & cat's potty.
My parents ahve an unfinshed basemnet also. it was kind of scary as a kid, but not they have the floor painted a tourquoose blue & the walls painted white & it is clean & divided into 4 sections: worksop, laundry, excersice & storage. They have some carpet tiles under the workout equipment & a dehumidifier, but it's not really finished.
I think I would only finish a basemnt if I was lacking something upstairs, like a den or playroom.

as long as a basement is bone dry i prefer it finished, even if it is one open space, just so it is clean enough to use if you have to. i find the garage is a better place to do dirty jobs.

Re: Spinoff - Anyone have a basement not finished and prefer that?
Our new house has a walk out basement that's half finished / half unfinished. The finished area is a nice space for the kids to play (it has great light with big windows and a sliding door) but there is also plenty of unfinished room for storage, tools, etc. Love that the kids can disappear down there and do their own thing when we have a lot of people over. Best of both worlds.
Its my first basement...I'm not a fan of hanging out in basements generally, though I've been in some pretty nice ones.

Re: Spinoff - Anyone have a basement not finished and prefer that?
Me! We don't get water down there but like you said, you never know. I guess the ceilings are a little low but we really could finish it. I just like using it for storage. We have a full stand up attic but it's a P.I.T.A. to get up there (I need DH to pull the ladder down) so I'd rather store Christmas decorations and other stuff in the basement. Plus I think it's creepy down there!

When I think of basements, I think of floods. I agree with all of this completely and have no desire to finish our basement in fear of it getting ruined!

Re: Spinoff - Anyone have a basement not finished and prefer that?
I grew up with a small finished basement as my playroom. I liked it. My parents are still in that house & the basement is still decent with the original way they finished it.
I currently have a small (not under all of the house) basement that is not finished. I guess it would be nice if it was finished but it is not a priority.

Re: Spinoff - Anyone have a basement not finished and prefer that?
Our basement was finished...until Hurricane Irene came this August amd flooded it completely. It is now unfinished amd DH is still not finished putting up sheetrock on 1 wall. We will then leave it that way (after painting the walls) and then throw some cheap area rugs near the washer/dryer.
I personally dont like unfinished basements since I spend a fair time doing laundry and like to fold my clothes right away when the dryer cycle ends. We also have a small room that we use as a storage area for summer/winter items that we access frequently. However, since this Irene disaster, DH wants to sell and buy a home thats not in a flood zone. I cant wait to see if that day will come so we can have a nice finished basement again.
