Petite shoppers

So where do you all shop without breaking the bank? I accept that I have to have my pants altered (I am five foot two) and also have tops brought in (I have no chestChat Icon ).

I have such a hard time finding tops really. It kills me to spend $60 on a top that I then have to have altered.

Re: Petite shoppers

Although I'm technically not petite (I'm 5'4" so I just miss the cutoff) I have a small chest and small torso so its hard to find clothes that fit. I usually shop at Express (they carry XXS) and in Junior's sections at department stores.

Re: Petite shoppers

I am 5'2" and I REFUSE to have my clothes altered! If it doesn't fit, I don't buy it. I also feel that especially with pants, it's not really only about length, but also about proportion. So even if I were to make a pair of pants shorter they would still not fit as well as if they were specifically made for a petite frame: the distance from waist to ****** would still be too long, the spot where the pants should get narrower towards the knee would be too low etc.

There are plenty of brands that make beautiful clothes for us short girls. I can't remember the last time I had to get something altered.

Re: Petite shoppers

I'm a BIG shopper at Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft on occasion and every day finds at Marshalls and Century 21. Normally, if I buy my pants in short, ankle or petite, I odn't have to have them hemmed.

I've had this little discussion with myself on LIF too, fascinating isn't it Chat Icon

I'm petite I get pants altered, but I'm large chested and have a hard time with tops for other reasons.

I just try to live with just enough pairs of pants. I usually ignore them when I'm shopping in general because I hate trying them on and rediscovering how short I really am. So when I need them, I brace myself and go get a pair, and that's it for a while.

Wooohoo I'm petite!? All my adult life I hated being "average" height- I wanted to be either petite or tall.

And I'm seriously cracking up over the c r otch vs vagina Chat Icon

This!! And if you're on their mailing list, they send tons of coupons for 30-40% off so I usually am able to get a lot of things for pretty cheap.

The harder part for me is tops. I look very young and run the risk of not looking my age when I shop in the juiors department. Sometimes it works out there. But when I shop in women's clothing my lack of curves almost always necessitates that I have tops altered. My brother and sister were shocked when they came shopping with me and saw that petite tops at Ann Taylor were still too big on me. I just have that kind of small frame combined with no chest.

Would you mind sharing where you shop? I literally get everything altered to fit me. Even more annoying is the vanity sizing at J.Crew bc even the smallest size requires some form of alterations. I would give anything to be able to walk into a store and be able to wear everything i purchased immediately / the next day.

I am glad to share:

First of all, I find that J.Crew's sizes are enormous. They typically cut clothes for women with much larger frame so their XS is much larger than an XS in Express or BR. (Think Michele Obama, she wears JC a lot: she is not a fat woman, rather very fit and athletic, but she is big: she has wide shoulders, large thighs, etc) I learned that years ago and never shop there anymore. (I also think their prices are ridiculous but that's not the topic of this story Chat Icon)

I love pants from Banana Republic: their size 2P fits me like a glove. I am little but have an a s s and some boobs (can I say that?Chat Icon) and I feel that there is ample room for both in their sizing. They also have a 0P and a 00P so those would probably accommodate someone with smaller assets.

I like Inc brand from Macy's. Their petite is well cut, athough it's usually a little less casual than I would like. I also really like shopping at Marshall's, Century 21 or Loehmanns. It's a hit or miss with those type of stores, of course, but I have had a lot of great hits there over the years. Mostly, I try to buy there. I think for someone who is very petite, those type of places would be perfect simply because they have a lot of odd sizes, like XXS or XXL. Loehmann's actually has a separate petite department and it's definitely worth checking out!

Also, I think Anthropologie sells a lot of brands that cut really small, so even if a top is not petite it still fits well on a small frame. And they have great sales too.

Everyone mentioned AnnTaylor and Loft. I think they have some great stuff, although a lot of their pants don't fit me very well because they tend to cut for someone with narrow hips and wide waist and I am just the opposite of that.
I like Express and used to shop there a lot when I worked. They have very nice basic pants.

Ets: I think Zara is also great for petite girls. Their clothes are cut very small and sometimes I have to get Medium rather than Small.
HTH!

It *used* to be NY&Co. but they are just as expensive as everywhere else now! H&M usually has pretty good stuff.

I'm not technically petite, I'm close to 5.6 and have boobs , but I am very thin and have a boyish figure (despite the boobs and not so small behindChat Icon ) but I shop petites a lot bc they fit me well, I find that AT loft always has something for me, not crazy about express but they also have stuff that fits me well. I also like H&M and forever 21, always find something at century 21 sometimes even at Marshalls. Oh and also Zara,Mango,CK.
I have a friend who is really petite, 5.1, very thin, no boobs and we often shop together , she also finds stuff at these stores .

I'm 4'11. I get a lot of stuff online. Modcloth almost exclusively for day dresses. I have to have most things altered in some way but I just consider it into the price.

eta: I'm a size 2. In mainstream stores I'm usually a zero. Therir stuff is cut quite large (Banana, JC, NY&co, ect... )

I am in the same boat! In tops I am a double zero or an XS. I am going to chek out Modcloth. never heard of it before.

I love many of the stores you all mentioned. Just a matter of finding my size and hoping stuff doesn't still need to be taken in. And hope that I can get things on sale since I have to add the price of alterations almost always.
