I think the whole idea of "stealing someone's thunder" is absurd. Whoever said that about you is wrong.
I am pregnant for the first time and if a friend/family member announced they were also pregnant w/ their first or fifth child I would be HAPPY for them not concerned about them "stealing my moment".
ITA.
I am also pregnant for the first time, an announcement is a happy time not a time to accuse anyone of "thunder stealing".
Besides if you want to talk about "stealing thunder" what about making the announcement during the cousin's grad party?

The way you worded the OP makes it sound like your cousin made her big announcement and that it was only after they did that you decided to announce yours too.
I had decided prior to knowing about my cousin, before we even went to the party, that I would tell my family about the baby. It had nothing to do with my cousins announcement.

I thought about that too, but she was so preoccupied with her friends, as she should be, that I don't even think she realized.

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
Considering it's rare that your entire family is together I don't think I would've been super bummed or thought you were "stealing my thunder". Actually it's kind of expected that when family get togethers happen catching up on family news will happen and that may mean there is more than one pregnant person. If I were the 1st time mom-to-be I may have been a little bummed but understood that this is an occasion that doesn't happen often and then would've wanted to compare notes on pregnancies and/or get advice.
Either way I'm not a big "thunder stealer" believer in pregnancy situations because every baby is a gift. Yes the hoopla is made for the first one but being on my 2nd pregnancy i don't feel less excited or feel that my 2nd baby should be celebrated in a more muted fashion.

I just don't believe that there is such thing as stealing thunder. It's like you are picking and choosing who has the more important news. Be happy for eachother and that's it. Why do I have to wait to share my good news? So annoying.
Sorry you had to experience that
And congrats!
I agree.

I think you both stole the new grad's thunder!
Considering your cousin is a first time mommy-to-be and an out of towner to boot, she probably wanted to make her announcement to the family in person and this was her opportunity to do so. Given the situation, if I were you, I would have waited.

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
I'm pregnant for the first time and I also think they definitely overreacted!
Wasn't it a family occasion? What if someone had just got engaged and announced it at the party? Would that be okay because it wasn't another pregnancy? Are you supposed to listen to someone talk about their good news and bottle yours up? That just doesn't make sense. Personally, I would be thrilled to know that my baby would be growing up with a cousin so close in age.

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
I was quiet about sharing this time. The first opportunity I had to "announce" would have been Easter but before then, my mom told me my cousin was/is pregnant with her first and would be announcing. My mom was concerned I would be upset. I def. was not. I emailed most family before the holiday to tell them privately and let Ashley do her thing at Easter - I felt like it was only fair for her to have that moment. And, because I honestly, I didn't think too many people would care that I was knocked up again
But, I don't think what you did was wrong in the slightest. You have every right to share the news of your pregnancy and you did it because the opportunity was there, not to deliberately "steal" anyone's thunder.
Congrats!!

ITA. If it were my graduation party I think I'd be a little peeved.
Also, as a first time Mom to be I'd also be a little upset if that happened to me. We have family OOS and if we went on a trip to announce that we were expecting and someone else also shared their news the exact same day in the same place I'd be pretty bummed out about it. But I wouldn't announce my pregnancy at someone else's party.
I'm just being honest. I am not an attention seeker at all and I generally like to blend in but for the very big things in my life I think it's nice to have a day, example: engagement news, wedding day, first baby news.
I also don't like to step on anyone's toes especially when it is "their" day. For example, we have a wedding to attend OOS and if we go it would be the first time a lot of our extended family would see our baby. I don't feel comfortable with that at all. It's the brides day and I wouldn't want my baby to take attention away from the couple so if we attend I already know I'm not going to take the baby. I always try to be considerate like that so I think that is part of the reason I'd be peeved too.

You're all part of the same family no reason you shouldnt have announced your good news too. Thunder stealer is a rude comment.

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
Lurking from parenting . . .
This all sounds a little silly to me, BUT if anyone had a right to feel their "thunder was stolen" it was the poor graduate! It was supposed to be THEIR party, attention on them and wound up with 2 pregnancy reveals. Even as an out-of-towner (as I always am at family events) I would not announce (and didn't when I had my only chance to) my pregnancy at someone else's party. Just doesn't feel right to me, it's no MY party, but that JMO!
In the grand scheme of things though, I really don't think it's a big deal.

That is how I feel about other people's parties too. I understand why some are saying good news is good news and there is no reason you should have to wait to share it with family but I personally like to let other people have their moments just like I would like for myself.

Honestly, if someone announced that they were pregnant at my graduation party, birthday party, engagement party, bridal shower, wedding, whatever, I would be HAPPY for them.
Believe me, my little cousin did not have a cloud over her graduation party. She had a blast! Or so I've gathered from her Facebook updates and pics.
I don't know about anyone elses families. But my family only seems to get together for a specific reason, ie weddings, graduations, christenings, etc. So it will ALWAYS be someones party. I'm not one to have a party specifically to make a baby announcement. I saw the opportunity, so I took it. The only time I really see it as inappropriate, is a wake/funeral.

Geezzzz Lisa! How dare you? Ya know I think you stole Chelsea's thunder when you announced you were pregnant the first time she jumped off a diving board!
When I was pg with AJ my step-sister was pregnant with her first..... I'm pretty sure no thunder was stolen except my belly was 15x the size of her's the entire time! Not the kind of thunder I wanted to steal!!!

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
While I don't see anything wrong, I could understand how others would.
I was in my friends wedding when I was pregnant with my 1st and didn't tell her until the end of her night because she was hounding me about not dancing and partying. Quite frankly, I was 11 weeks pregnant and exhausted. Of course she was estatic, but I didn't want ANYTHING to take away from her day.

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
I can't believe people would even think the graduate would ever care!
Maybe b/c i come from a HUGE family, but geez, there are SO many grad parties, showers, communions, bday parties, etc...that there is usually SOME kind of announcement going on! I can't believe anyone would ever really care to tell you the truth! It adds to the happiness of the day and the point of a party is to get together and just have a good time. I remember having a graduation party at my moms house and if someone had announced a pregnancy i would have thought "cool!".

I don't give a hoot about thunder stealing.
It's all good news, you sharing your news doesn't take away from me having my moment.
I don't think you did anything wrong. I'd rather a party with too much good news then hearing everyone talk about aunt gerty's hip replacement and that uncle all isn't here because he kicked it.

Our cousin is preggo with #3 and I'm on #2 and we are due 4 days apart. We are thrilled for each other.
I would NEVER accuse anyone of thunder stealing whether it was my 1st or 10th!
I think its a little petty.

Honestly for me being PG for the first time I would have been upset that someone who has already had kids announced it after I did at the same party.
I dont think I would have said anything except I would have told DH I was upset.
My sis and I are both PG for the first time and easily could have announced it at the same time as she did but I waited because I wanted everyone to be happy for her and I would have that shortly after.
The party wasn't being held so the couple could announce their first child.
What gives them more rights to the part than the person having her 3rd or 13th child?

Awww that stinks, I prob would have done the same thing and told my family. It is so exciting when there are multiple births in the family - why can't people just be happy for others and not turn it into who is trying to be better than someone else? completely agree
