So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
We had my cousins grad party yesterday. My other cousin, who is my age, came up from Virginia to announce they are expecting their 1st baby. We are expecting our 3rd. It's rare that my whole family is together, so I decided to tell them as well. We didn't make a big deal about it. No revealing of the sono, no t-shirts. Just quietly told people as the night went on. Someone had mentioned to one of my other cousins, "did you hear Lisa's pregnant too?" He replies "yeah, I heard" and then looks at the mom-to-be and says "nothing like stealing your thunder." Turns out my grandfather put him in his place. I was worried that it would be perceived this way. But I didn't think anyone would actually say anything, in front of my own mom!

Awww that stinks, I prob would have done the same thing and told my family. It is so exciting when there are multiple births in the family - why can't people just be happy for others and not turn it into who is trying to be better than someone else?

I just don't believe that there is such thing as stealing thunder. It's like you are picking and choosing who has the more important news. Be happy for eachother and that's it. Why do I have to wait to share my good news? So annoying.
Sorry you had to experience that
And congrats!

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
Honestly as someone who is first time pregnant I would have been a little bummed that someone else was announcing the same thing at the same time who has BTDT. However I don't think I would have called anyone a thunder stealer.. at least not in font of their parents! LOL
Also I can see someone who is a first time preggo coming on here and saying their thunder was stolen during their announcement by a 3rd time pregnant women and they would get the "how dare they" response.

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
Every baby is a happy thing. For someone to get upset over someone else announcing they are pregnant too is just crazy. I wouldn't care if it was baby 3 or baby 20 it is still a happy thing.

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
Honestly for me being PG for the first time I would have been upset that someone who has already had kids announced it after I did at the same party.
I dont think I would have said anything except I would have told DH I was upset.
My sis and I are both PG for the first time and easily could have announced it at the same time as she did but I waited because I wanted everyone to be happy for her and I would have that shortly after.

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
In a situation like that, there is no way they wouldn't consider you a "thunder stealer". Kwim? Like if you announced it as you were in labor, they'd be all, "really, you couldn't keep it to yourself?".
At my dh's cousins baby shower, her cousin announced she was pg too. I think thats a bit much, I mean it's really meant to be the mom to be's special day. Not at a birthday party or just a random BBQ.
I don't think you did anything wrong.

So to the girls who think I did steal the thunder.....is my 3rd child any less important than her first?
I have to hide the fact that I'm excited to have a baby because I've BTDT already??

I don't think anyone was insinuating that at all. Of course your child is just as important. I think it has more to do with just letting a first time mommy to be have a moment of her own when announcing she was pregnant. And from the way you worded it, it sort of sounded like she announced and then you decided to tell people too. Everyone feels differently about these types of things. Personally if it was me in your position I would have waited until a different time.

Ive already BTDT and I still kind of agree. I dont think it makes your child less important, our hers more. It is about THE MOMENT, not the child. I wouldve let her have her first moment, her first pregnancy announcement.

All babies are exciting and are blessings. And yes, I still think you should have waited. This person came up from VA and announced. You could have waited IMO.
I still think that the comment made about "thunder stealing" should have not been made at the party. But I do understand how they could feel that way.
But - how about that Grad who you were all there to celebrate and this became 2 announcements about other couples. All of you had exciting news. If it was me, I would have waited.

I agree! They had their big announcement moment, and it's not like you immediately yelled out "Me too!" You tactfully told people quietly throughout the party. I see nothing wrong with what you did. Babies are babies- so happy and exciting and people need to just get over themselves and be happy together!

Ha, what about your cousin who graduated? Poor thing didn't stand a chance!
Kidding - honestly, it sucks. Two new babies is better than one. The other preggo needs to get over it.

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
Call me a negative person but IMO a bunch of people at a family party don't REALLY care enough for anyone to steal anyone's thunder. I mean are new grandmas and aunts super excited? Sure. However, for all cousins etc. it is NICE news to hear but their lives go on. That's why I am not a fan of these big crazy reveal parties I've heard about. I just feel like it's taking something that YOU'RE immediates are crazy excited for and then kinda expecting 50 OTHER people to treat the news the same way.

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
I think the whole idea of "stealing someone's thunder" is absurd. Whoever said that about you is wrong.
I am pregnant for the first time and if a friend/family member announced they were also pregnant w/ their first or fifth child I would be HAPPY for them not concerned about them "stealing my moment".
This reminds me of petty LIW threads where girls got mad when bridesmaid got preggo or engaged and they felt they were "taking their moment"...it is so pretty IMO.

OMG you summed up exactly the way i feel about so much of this stuff, lol!! I'm waiting for the day when parent- to- be start jumping out of airplanes with pink or blue streamers as a creative "gender reveal", lol. People are getting crazy these days. I had a friend go nuts over her first baby and revealing the gender and making such a big deal about the "surprise" for 2 months so that when their gender reveal party actually came we were all kinda like "oh cool, a boy, yay lets get on with life". To each their own i guess, but its getting out of hand in my opinion!
And as for stealing thunder...I don't think what you did was a big deal..you added happy news to happy news. You didn't stand up in the middle of a party with a megaphone and shout it out you know? I may have waited a bit ONLY because i would have been wondering if my cousin would be upset BUT i still don't think doing what you did was a big deal!

ITA. IMO it just adds to the excitement and joy of the day. You are all family, one persons news is no more important than the other and the day doesn't "belong" to anyone. People need to get over themselves.

Yup. I can't help but feel this way b/c personally whenever someone tells me "IT'S A BOY" or "IT'S A GIRL" my big reaction is, "Oh, that's nice".
I feel like unless you're the grandma who had nine sons and has been waiting 30 years for a little pink bundle- "That's nice" is about the best reaction you can get- and I consider myself a "baby person" (I mean- heck I'm here on LIF even- what about all the people who are more interested in cats?)
Plus the baby can only be a boy or a girl. If someone's gender reveal party revealed that the baby was an intersexed space alien that lays golden eggs I would truly and honestly be like HOLY $HIT THAT'S AMAZING!!!!!
ETA I realize this side convo is a bit of a digression, lol, but the point was that people care less than you think so imo the "thunder" is only perceived thunder anyway...

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
The way you worded the OP makes it sound like your cousin made her big announcement and that it was only after they did that you decided to announce yours too.
Yes, every baby is exciting, and deserves to be celebrated, but as a first time mom I would have been a little hurt. This was their moment that they had been waiting for - they drove hours to be with their entire family. They probably fantasized about telling everyone (I know I did). And then someone decides almost on a whim to jump into the spotlight with them.
I kind of understand how she felt, but I think she will soon realize that very few things can truly "steal the thunder" of a first time mommy.

Re: So apparently I am a "thunder stealer".
For the record, I decided to tell people because quite frankly, my family doesn't get together too often. I can't think of any occasion, aside from her baby shower, that we would all get together again within the next year. And even that would be just the women. My last 2 babies I told family at get-togethers similar to this one.
Also, the mother-to-be is a very laid back person. She didn't appear to have a problem with it. She's not like that. It was another cousin who made the comment. And I very much tried to keep the focus on her. Asking her the typical pregnancy questions.
I thought about keeping it quiet, but I assumed good news would be welcomed. And that they would be excited for me as well, which they were.
When they first told us, I congratulated them and didn't say anything about us. Then after the excitement died down I pulled her and my cousin aside and told them before anyone else.
I did my best to not take away from her moment. But I was excited too, and I'm not apologizing for that. 1st or 3rd, it's still a baby, and a blessing.
