Ladies with GD...
I couldn't get an appointment with dietician until wednesday so I'm at a loss as to what to eat, and google is overwhelming me. I had plain scrambled eggs for breakfast and i'll have salad for dinner but i'm not sure about lunch. I usually just snack a lot throughout the day but I feel like I should be eating regular sized meals - is that right?
i've had an aversion to chicken this entire pregnancy and it seems to be the most suggested option.
what are you eating for breakfast and lunch?

Re: Ladies with GD...
I was just dx so I don't have a real feel for what I should be eating yet either. I had a phone convo with a dietician (90min) yesterday and will meet with her for 30min on Monday.
The jist of it is ALWAYS eat something else with the carb. Meaning if you have cereal, put some blueberries in it. The diet is big on balance. (each meal should have a combo of fat, carb, meat etc)
Eat every 3 hours or so. With 3 meals (45 grams of carbs) and 3 snacks (15-30 grams)
I can actually email you the handout she gave me, which would be easier.
Sample meals really depend on what you like. ie she said i could have pretty much unlimited eggs and meat (pre packaged) GAG on both for me.
So far I can tolerate Eggs or Kashi cereal for breakfast with fruit and coffee
lunch is a salad or avocado and tomato on ww (she seemed to be a big fan of salmon in a can?!)
dinner fish /chicken/meat with ww rice or coucous (small serving, think palm size)
snacks fruit yogurt nuts veggies (carrots w ranch)
this website is excellent. hope it gives you some ideasLinky

Re: Ladies with GD...
I don't have GD, but the opposite...I produce too much insulin which drops my sugars too low, but have to deal with the same diet.
I found double protein bread (there is also double fiber, which I get if I can't find the protein) and it has been a lifesaver. I put everything on that. PB (try to limit), eggs, and tomato, cucumber and avocado - with a little evoo and salt (like PP said! ).
walnuts are my big snack, since they have omega 3s and they are not a *typical* nut allergy. string cheese is another favorite snack.
nature's valley has some good snacks w/in the guidelines
I will saute onions, carrots and spinach in EVOO and add leftover steak or hamburger...or mix it into scrambled eggs.
I started drinking a lot of milk, but I don't think too much is good...I start to feel dizzy, so I've been drinking mostly water with lemon or lime added.
I add bacon and hard boiled eggs to my salads to make them hardier.

Re: Ladies with GD...
the rule of thumb with GD is to watch the carbs you are taking in. ie starchy food. add more protein with all your meals and snacks and try to limit simple sugars like candy, sugar. instead of fruits added to salad i would do nuts if you are not allergiv or cheese.

Re: Ladies with GD...
The key to GD is having balanced, healthy meals.
You can have a sandwich for lunch, in fact that's good! A sandwich like egg salad or something with lettuce and tomato is perfect. You have your fat from the mayo, carbs from the bread and veggies from lettuce and tomato. Its important to definitely eat carbs, just limit them. They DO NOT want you NOT eating carbs.
It is also important to snack. Eating every 3 hours or so is also key. Breakfast, then snack, lunch then snack, dinner then evening snack. Keeps your metabolism going.
You would be surprised at how many different things you can eat on GD diet. The really important thing is portion size. A ounce of cooked pasta is one carb. That's it. No more than that. My dietician suggested I get dreamfield's pasta. They have GREAT recipes on their website for low carb alternative meals! And Waldbaum's carries every which way of Dreamfields (elbows, rotini, spaghetti, angel hair, etc).
Good luck

Re: Ladies with GD...
After you check your blood sugar for a while you will start to see patterns. For example I learned that I had high fasting blood sugar in the morning and high blood sugar after breakfast. That meant I could barely tolerate one slice of ww toast at breakfast, and no way could I have friut before noon. But I tolerated carbs much better at night, so I allowed myself more carbs for my late-afternoon snack and for dinner. I also found it helped to have a carb snack before bed... this helped my fasting sugars go down slightly. But ultimately I had to be put on nighttime insulin for fasting sugars.
By the way, if you have to go on insulin at all, do not stress about it in the least. I was soooo upset about having to go on insulin but the needles actually hurt less than checking blood sugar, and it brought my morning sugars down considerably, which was a huge stress relief. Good luck!
