Extremely Poisonous plant invading our area
http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/39809.html Giant Hogweed Do Not Touch This Plant!
Giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) is a Federally listed noxious weed. Its sap, in combination with moisture and sunlight, can cause severe skin and eye irritation, painful blistering, permanent scarring and blindness. Contact between the skin and the sap of this plant occurs either through brushing against the bristles on the stem or breaking the stem or leaves. What to do if you come in contact with giant hogweed:
This plant poses a serious health threat; see your physician if you think you have been burned by giant hogweed. If you think you have giant hogweed on your property, do NOT touch it. How do you identify giant hogweed?
Giant hogweed is a biennial or perennial herb in the carrot family (Apiaceae) which can grow to 12 feet or more. Its hollow, ridged stems grow 2-4 inches in diameter and have dark reddish-purple blotches. Its large compound leaves can grow up to 5 feet wide. It's white flower heads can grow up to 2 1/2 feet in diameter. Please refer to the Giant Hogweed Identification page for further help.
Some other plants look very similar. If you need additional information or assistance in identifying your plant, you may call us at 845-256-3111. You will be asked to describe the plant height, stem color, leaf shape, flower color and shape, as well as give directions to the plant site. If you can take digital photos and email them to us, it would help us identify your plant.

Holy cow. That's exactly the kind of plant I'd stop to look at and probably touch. Too bad it's poisonous, because it's pretty striking.
Thanks for the warning!!

Re: Extremely Poisonous plant invading our area
Fox 5 News was in my town last night, interview some families that live on the block bordering the Muttontown Preserve! We take the kids hiking through there a lot, and now I told DH we are not going in there for while (rumor has it the NYSDEC is in there removing what they found).

That's why it started out as an ornamental plant in Europe (although I would have thought that severe burning and blindness would have made it slightly less desirable... )

Figures. I guess it's in our nature to be selfish and think only about what we want, not the bigger picture. With flowerheads like that, I'm sure it's a powerhouse seed spreader too.
There are other plants you can get that flower form and leaf size from, no need for something so detrimental.

They have a number you call, it should be on Fox 5's website. They said on the news last night not to get rid of it yourself.

Re: Extremely Poisonous plant invading our area
Thanks for posting this! I caught the end of a news segment about it last night, but didn't hear the name of the plant.
Too bad it's so poisonous--it's a pretty plant otherwise.
