Re: nipple confusion - fact or fiction?

I'm not BF but use 2 different types of bottles with diffreent nipples (Dr. Brown's for the cereal at night and avent for the regular formula) and bella has no problems. I would imagine the same would go for BF.

Re: nipple confusion - fact or fiction?

A friend of mine had a really slow let down, so nursing took a looooong time. When she introduced a bottle which provided milk much faster, the baby started to refuse to BF. When she stopped the bottle, the baby BFed again. So, it wasn't an issue of nipple confusion for her, but the bottle did cause troubles since it allowed for much more immediate gratification.

Give it a try, if you see there is a problem you can always stop -- it won't be permanently ruined!

I did not until I started using more and more bottles and raised her to a level 2 nipple which has a faster flow. Eventually she got very used to the bottle and would no longer latch but this was around 4-5 months old.
I think if you keep the bottles with a slower flow nipple then you are fine. My daughter had bottles and pacifiers from 2 weeks on. Actually she took a pacifier in the hospital and her nursing was fine until we ran into other problems which made us rely on a bottle more.

Gianna has had a bottle here and there since she was a week old. I am also EBF, she has had no problems going back and forth. We use advent bottles. She refuses a pacifer though.

Re: nipple confusion - fact or fiction?

My son had absolutely no problems with switching from bottle, to breast, to a pacifier. In the beginning I used a slower flowing nipple on his bottles and gradually increased. But he was given one or two bottles of formula in the hospital (so I could sleep a bit) and a pacifier and I was still able to bf him without any problems.

I'm saying fiction. Joseph had to be feed EBF for the first week since he didn't have a developed sucking reflex. Never any confusion.

Same here. Sidney used to hit me and cry and moan on the breast because the milk wouldn't come out fast enough. I stopped the bottle for a month and that helped. She had a really bad latch for the first few weeks too though Chat Icon
