Duck, Outer Banks

Updated:

We booked a house right on the beach near Duck for the week before Easter.

I would love to hear suggestions of specific things to do in the area. We'll be there for a week! It will be me, DH, DD (21 months) and my parents.

Thanks!

Re: Outer Banks in April

my parents have a vacation house down there.... for the most part, its all homes that you rent out, not many hotels. most of the houses only rent by the full week. But april is "off season", so you might be able to find one that will rent for a long weekend or something.

i've never been down there in april, so i'm not sure about the weather. might not be total " beach" weather yet.. but it should definitely be warm enough to take a walk on the beach and stuff.
you can go to the Cape HAtteras lighthouse, the wright brothers first flight site in kitty hawk. if yu stay in the duck/kitty hawk/nags head area, theres lots of shops and stuff, and good restaurants...

Re: Outer Banks in April

We used to go to the Outer Banks every April during Spring Break. We had a house in Duck and would open it up for the season. It's definitely pretty quiet down there with mostly locals from VA and NC taking day trips, etc. Not all the restaurants are open but most of the shops are. All the shops in Duck are open and you can stop at the Cotton Gin on the way down too. The surf shops remain open too. Awful Arthurs is open all year and pretty popular for a bite to eat. Like a PP stated you can go to the Hatteras Light House or the smaller one in Corolla. We used to take the day and then stop at all the beautiful open houses on the way to Corolla! Usually this in April you can see some of the wild horses too! If you go out to Cape Hatteras, there is plenty of shopping along the way! Kitty Hawk, the Wright Brother's Memorial is fun to get a kite and walk the dunes. As for the weather, it's hit or miss. We've been there during break, closer to Easter when it's been beautiful and we slept on the beach! I know it was about 70 last week! But normally, I would say it's warm but not hot! Take a light jacket at night. You might be able to get a hotel stay at one of the few places that are there. Our house was in Port Trinitie in Duck and we rented it with Atlantic Realty. Hope you have a great time, you'll love it! Don't forget to hit up the Brew Thru!

so exciting!! you'll love it Chat Icon
my parents house is on Cape hatteras, so i'm not all that familiar with Duck. BUT some general things you can do in the area
Take the about 1 hour drive to see Cape Hatteras lighthouse. on the way, you can also stop and see Bodie Island lighthouse, too.
in kitty hawk (closer to duck) is the wright brothers first flight memorial, which is neat to see. theres a bunch of restaurants and shopping near duck, too.
mostly, the whole OBX area is just a great place to hang out on the beach or on the deck with the family Chat Icon

I highly recommend driving to Kill Devill Hills and eating at the Kill Devil Grill. We ate there every night last summer. Delish and surprising from the outside (it is an old 1950's diner car).

Re: Duck, Outer Banks

We rented a house soundside in Salvo for a week this September. Its our third straight year heading to OBX and we can't wait. Despite the long a** drive its still a great place to vacation with the kiddies (ours will be 3 and 2 this year). Duck is pretty far north but if you make the trip down to hatteras island definitely stop at the Orange Blossum bakery in Frisco and get some Apple Uglies. Sooo yummmy Chat Icon

The OBX Connection forums are very active with locals and fellow OBX "addicts":

Enjoy your trip!
