Need opinions on what to do in our dining room cutout!
It's been empty the entire 3 years we've lived here. We never knew what to put there. We had some ideas for shelving, adding doors, etc but not in the plan now that we're selling.
There is a mirror in the cutout in the hallway which is two steps down from the DR so antoher mirror is out. Don't want to spend a lot of money... any ideas on how to stage this area to look good?
Sorry don't have any good updated pics on my work comp... but here are a few to get an idea. The cutout basically takes up that whole wall:
hate the light fixture but it's staying and there are bamboo shades on the window now
table opened another way... cutout is on left side wall
old xmas pic but cutout on right and you can see hallway
gate is gone, DR and cutout wall to the right, you can see hallway mirror straight ahead

that space is just SCREAMING for shelving with some cute liltte tea plates.
you should be able to get some inexpensive shelving at Ikea and a few cheapo plates at an outlet or online!!!
line these
with something fun....as just an example
$12.95 for the set
or
$25 for the set
or
$25 for the set
you could probably find plates to suit the purpose at a dollar store really.
you just need to give the buyer an idea. a use. it doens't have to be that expensive.

I'd buy one large piece of art and put it there and be done. Check out homegoods or BBB for something.. I wouldn't add a lot of little things, because then it's a lot of holes in the wall to patch up.

What about adding some inexpensive lighting to the top and than placing a nice piece of artwork in there...like a sculpture or plate

a large square canvas painting/artwork leaning against the wall
if you put a bunch of little things, its just going to look crowded in there IMO
one large focal piece and be done with it

Yes-I would do this too. You can probably even make your own...buy a big stretched canvas and find a cool picture to mod podge on..or use mod podge to make a decoupage picture. If you have a great photograh you could even blow that up on canvas, tinted, sepia etc.

Great ideas! We actually have this big square iron piece in the foyer which kind looks out of place... i think it'll fit in the cutout, have to measure later, do you think it would look good in the DR?

ITA, I think the iron work in the foyer now is a little to large for that space but would look great in the cutout
