Some people... ugh...

I knew I was having a baby shower and my mother would be hosting (I don't have a sister or anyone else that would help her out). Things were supposed to be kept a surprise. The date, location, everything.

Well, a few weeks ago a friend e-mailed me to say that she would not be able to attend but thank you for thinking of her. I replied that I didn't know anything about it and had no idea invitations were sent out.

A few days ago another friend emails me to say that she is unable to go but if there's anything I still need afterwards to let her know. Again, I said I am not supposed to know any of the details and to please still RSVP to whoever the contact is to which she responded that "well since it didn't say it was a surprise on the invitation I didn't know you didn't know about it."

Then over the weekend I saw on FB that a friend is in town. So I text her to ask how long she'll be around for. She said just for the weekend and she is still unsure about attending the baby shower "next month". I told her that I am not supposed to know anything about it. She replied with a stupid "save". Didn't work.

Ok, so now it's probably my mom's fault for not including "It's a surprise" on the invitation but I am the person that would never mention an invitation to the guest of honor if they weren't the RSVP themselves and never said a word to me. I would assume it was a surprise.

I guess in this day and age many girls help plan their own showers but now I feel like I have to avoid all contact with my friends with fear that more details will be spilled.

I want to contact a friend just to say hi because it's been some time but now I'm not going to.

Ugh. Vent over.

Ugh I'm sorry. The same thing happened to me at my bridal shower, she didn't write surprise, all my friends and family assumed I knew. It was disappointing, but the bright side was I looked put together at the shower, ha.

I agree with you 100%. I guess I'm old fashioned in that sense. Even if you don't know it's a surprise or not, still act like it until you are SURE!

Awe, I'm sorry. I understand how you are feeling. The same thing happened for my bridal shower. I'm out in AZ and apparently the 'Norm' is not having surprise showers. So a couple of people slipped little things about it. But the biggest kicker was pulling up to my moms house and seeing all the cars lined up. It blew the whole thing (even though by then I had figured it out). At least you now have an idea that every weekend next month that you are invited to something you can make sure you dress up Chat Icon That's what I did to kinda soften the whole blown surprise. ITA - I always ask the host whether its a surprise if it's not clear from the invite! I would never want to be the one to ruin it.

I always assume the party is a surprise whether it is on the invitation or not. Your friends should have rsvp'd to whomever it said on the invitation. I'm sorry this happened.

I understand.
I wouldn't contact the guest either. I've received invitations for shower's before and though they didn't say it's a surprise on it, I still didn't go contacting the guest of honor. Esp when it wasn't sent from them. It's just a precaution I take because you never know.. it very well might be a surprise.

I'm sorry.

If it doesn't say "surprise" on the invite, I wouldn't assume it was. A lot of baby showers aren't surprises in my experience, but I don't think I would contact the guest of honor until after to say sorry for not being able to make it.

Hopefully you will still be surprised about the location, theme, etc. Chat Icon
