i have an entertainment unit that i love. it's a piece of furniture though.
i just love fireplaces. fireplace all the way!

We have ours above the fireplace. I wasn't a fan of the idea at first.....but it's grown on me.

My parents actually just redid their fireplace and since this pic below have mounted the flat screen

you will strain your neck watching tv like that....as others have posted - it should be at eye level when sitting which hardly no one does.....
This looks lovely - but TV there is WAY too high!

I always felt that tv's above fireplaces are too high for normal comfortable viewing, so i prefer them on a separate entertainment unit that has storage for cable boxes/dvd's etc, and is lower

I HATE them over fireplaces...IMO they do not belong there, nor is it good for your TV.

That must look beautiful!
I only like them hung when they are done the right way. Wires/ cables hidden, no clutter, cable box not shown etc.
Otherwise they belong in an entertainment center.

I don't like TV's above fireplaces... They are too high for comfortable viewing and take away from the beauty of the fireplace. I wouldn't get a big wall unit or anything. Just a small stand with storage for cable box, etc. so you don't see any wires. I hate when wires are visible!
I have a small stand/unit for flatscreen and a fireplace, but not on the same wall.
We will build a mantle around our fireplace, but for now, it's flush. It's a gas fireplace.
I'll look for picture later.

I have my tv over the fireplace in my family room and have one mounted on the wall in the den with a low entertainment center below. I am not a fan of big entertainment centers but have also seen some really nice low ones. The tv is not too high for me now but took a day or so to get used to iit looks nice and clean but I do have to admit this works best with my home setup/flow. If I had the space I would rather bring out the beauty of the fireplace by hanging a mirror over it and have the tv somewhere else. I'm hoping In the next house I will have room to have the tv and fp separate!
I also have the cable box and all wires hidden behind the tv. I hate wires and electronics showing and if I couldn't conceal them I would not have hung the tv there.

This is what type of a TV stand I'm talking about... not wall unit or even entertainment center... we just call it a TV stand.
Then we plan to build a mantle around the fireplace.

I personally do not like TVs over fireplaces. First, I feel they are too high. Second, I feel that a fireplace is sort of a "traditional" type of item in a house and should be "dressed" so to speak as such, and a TV just isn't that.
