Full Moon and Labor - thoughts?
Everybody keeps telling me to check when the next full moon is because I am sure to have baby then Well, eventually curiosity got the best of me and I checked - February 18th is the next one (this Friday) I'm due Feb 28th.
So I began to look onine to see if there's any truth to this possible 'old wives tale'.
From what I found, the theory is that the moon’s gravitational pull effects the amniotic fluid in much the same way as it effects the water in the sea, rivers and even the water that’s otherwise found in our bodies.
One website says that: "As a woman’s body prepares for natural childbirth, the amniotic sac becomes distended to the point where it will easily burst if put under pressure. Under normal circumstances, the pressure of labor contractions bursts the sac. During a full moon, the pressure caused by the moon’s effect on the water inside the sac can cause the same things to happen, but without the accompanying contractions"
Some doctos & midwives say that if there’s a Full Moon within a few days either side of a woman's due date, the chances are your baby will be born on that day. Most maternity units even have more staff available during periods of a full moon.
So there you have it - - what are your guys' thoughts on this. I think it's interesting to say the least

Re: Full Moon and Labor - thoughts?
Full moon March 19th, due March 21st...my boss and I were cracking up, she told me to make sure I schedule myself off for the 19th
I've always believed in the full moon thing myself though. My parents were EMTs back before I was born and they told me many stories about how the ERs and the L&D unit were crazy busy on full moon nights.

Re: Full Moon and Labor - thoughts?
Well, with DS I was scheduled to be induced on Saturday, July 19, 2008 I was 5 days late. I went into L&D at 7:00 a.m. and my DR. sent me home due to the fact that there were no rooms L&D was jam packed there were women in the hallway.... and everyone says it was due to the full moon the night before.
It didn't work for me but obviously it worked for a lot of other girls!

Re: Full Moon and Labor - thoughts?
hmmmm well I would be psyched for that bc I'm due on the 25th and would be happy to go on the 18th - or at least get going. . though if I'm not having a baby I'm supposed to be at a dinner party on the 18th so more like my water will break sitting down at a table with 15 people!

Re: Full Moon and Labor - thoughts?
yeah, the more & more I read about it the more I'm starting to believe that it's actually a REAL thing. I HOPE that's the case with me... although likewise I hope that doesn't mean that my hospital would be too full and my Dr extra busy.
We'll see I guess!!!!!

Re: Full Moon and Labor - thoughts?
I just checked for June 2008. I did not go into labor or have DS on a full moon. DS was born on June 24th, I went into labor on the 22nd. The full moon was June 18th.
Although it didn't hold true for me, I do believe there is truth behind it.
I just checked for April 2011. My EDD is April 25th, but according to what I found the Full Moon is April 18th which is ironically my scheduled c-section date!

Re: Full Moon and Labor - thoughts?
well i guess it does say within a day or two of your due date it has an influence which means those of us hoping the moon will pull us a week away. . might be out of luck
also if it means I can't get a private room I would be sad bc I really want DH to stay with me overnight!! maybe I can wish to be three days after the full moon so everyone will be done. . I can wait that long!

Re: Full Moon and Labor - thoughts?
While it's not true for everyone, there definitely is a correlation from what I have experienced in the hospitals. L&d is always kicking during the full moon and the rest of the hospital is usually pretty crazy too!
