embarrassed to ask but ...
I remember reading somewhere that saliva is not good for sperm. Is that true? And if so, does that count if the saliva is, um, on dh before the actual deed? Kwim??

correct, saliva is not good for sperm.
i don't think it would be harmful in the way you describe, no.
i think more like if you spit in your hand to lube up.
