A/C repair - updated: now I feel silly!

Help!

All of a sudden, our A/C unit in our dining room, which cools the lower two levels of our house, started making a snapping/cracking noise, and smelled funky. I turned it off, and tried turning it back on. It won't start again.

So, does anyone know a good A/C repairman?

UPDATE: So, when we called to ask my FIL if he knows of any A/C repair men, he suggested that we check the circuit breaker. Turns out, it had been tripped. I had assumed that wasn't the issue b/c I had turned off the A/C myself after it started acting funny. FIL said that it could have been a power surge that caused the sound, smell, and subsequently, the breaker being tripped. I'm just happy that the A/C works again!

I have found that if its not covered under warranty, its usually cheaper to replace...
