Which type of floor in basement?
We will be redoing the basement but can't decide between vinyl or carpet. My concern with carpet is that if there is ever water damage or a foundation leak the whole carpet will need to replace.
The rest of the house is all wood floors - no carpet...

I just ripped up disgusting moldy carpet from our basement. NEVER put carpet in the basement. We're going to put down the vinyl peel and stick tiles and use area rugs.
I'm shuddering at how gross the carpet was!

Vinyl. We did ours in self-stick vinyl tile that looks close to real tile, and it looks fantastic! I would hate to deal with carpet in case of a flood.

We did carpet. We weren't concerned about moisture since it never floods and we use a dehumidifier. We thought it looked more airy in the basement, and when we have kids they will have a soft area to play on.

Id NEVER put carpet in a basement. My family home used to flood a lot and it had nothing to do with a high water table. The washer and dryer flooded and burst pipes happened too. My parents had to make a major insurance claim and the house stunk. I dont know much about other kinds of basement flooring.

we put carpet for 90% and the rest is ceramic tile., but we dont get any water down their. Does your basement get any water after big storms?

From my expereince water can get under the vinyl. We had vinyl in the bathroom and kitchen in the basement. Occassionally the shower drain would back up causing a little water to overflow.
We had a pipe burst in the kitchen as well.
The water was trapped under the vinyl and caused a serious mold problem and terrible smell.
We had to rip it out and put down a cheap ceramic tile from Homedepot.
I think the project for a small bathroom and kitchen cost about $200, DIY.
We replaced the carpet in the bedroom and livingroom. The carpet that we pulled up did not have any water damage.

i would do tile (even though it will be cold in the winter) but use carpet squares or cheaper area rugs. In the summer pull up the rugs.
Unless you live on a hill, high part of the island I would stay away from carpet.

Ah! Good to know.
With knowing that while tile might be more money now in the long run it will probably save you--especially if you already know the basement floods

Yes I am curious about this. I was going to do tile in my basement with area rugs.
depending on the quality of the job and how much water you get in a basement... it cant certainly get under and stay under causing mold/mildew and bad smells.
Tile would be the best option and since you are not BIG DIY-ers... what better place to try it out then the basement!!!

What about laminate floors, the ones that snap together. They're not that expensive and easy to install. If you ever have a problem with water they're easy to take up and you would only have to take up the part where the problem is.
My neighbor had carpet in her basement and after the oil company came to service her boiler they did something wrong and she ended up with a flooded basement...something about a valve breaking I guess to the water heater and before that a pipe broke and flooded it.
