Re: If you SERIOUSLY think about moving off of LI....where would you go?
I wanted to leave, DH wouldn't even consider it... we ended up buying here. I would still leave if given the chance. I love LI but the taxes are insane. For what we pay here... we could be living a crazy lavish lifestyle somewhere else. I would want to stay in the north east though. Upstate NY, PA, or even CT would be ideal. I saw some really great waterfront houses (practically mansions) in Maine for less then what we paid here. So, I would def consider there too!

Re: If you SERIOUSLY think about moving off of LI....where would you go?
We moved from Bellmore to Madison, CT in October and we regret nothing. I love raising my kids here, and we are only 2 hours away from our family in Queens and LI. Last night DH and I were on our porch after the kids went to bed, looking at the water, and he turned to me and asked, why didn't we come to madison years ago!

My aunt lives in Madison - it's such a beautiful town. Very nice choice.

I dream of moving to San Diego, it is expensive but beautiful. I think if I lived there I would never want to go away on vacation
I also loveeeeee Charleston, SC. It is my favorite city on the east coast. Clean, beautiful, beaches, tons of shopping and amazing restaurants!

San Antonio, Texas
In one year's time with no raises, etc and actually reducing our total income by 25% I was able to still purchase a modest home in a very highly sought after school district.
Cost of living is cheaper, life is a little more easy going and I was able to transfer. Hubby actually stayed with same company just a different independently own branch of it.

I am DYING to move from NY. I just have no idea where. I would look for very mild winters, child friendly, with lots of outdoor rec opportunities, not too far from NY.

Re: If you SERIOUSLY think about moving off of LI....where would you go?
we bought a house in Orange County NY.
I am not from LI, I am from (and still live during the week in) Brooklyn.
after considering all of our options, we went to Orange, after first considering briefly LI (taxes are WAY too high, and sue me, but I just don't see the big deal about the schools. I don't think there is a higher rate of rocket scientists graduating from either county to justify these crazy costs), then buying a condo in the city (stupid for us, when we have a HUGE apt in Brooklyn that we pay a cheap rent for) Westchester (taxes are high and homes are close together...it's not too much different than Nassau in the affordable areas..and just WAYY out of our league in the "get away from it all" areas), Putnam (taxes are VERY high, at least in the areas we were looking at) lower Dutchess (a little too far communting wise) and finally, Orange.
we have a lovely little farmhouse, built in 1800. has about 1900 square feet on about .5 acre. we bought it for less than 300k. taxes are less than $4500 per year. decent schools (though we are probably sending to catholic anyway).
there are tons of farms, horseback riding, veggie picking, water rafting (delware river close by) mountain trails, skiing at major mountains a little over an hour away. it's a great location for us.
I think that Orange county is going to see a lot more commuters coming to the area as the taxes in closer communities rise.
one of the great things about Orange County is Woodbury Commons. it pays so much taxes to the county that is basically subsidizes all residents' property taxes (not to mention the awesome shopping and great availability of part time/seasonal jobs for SAHMs )
outside of NY, we would either go north to Massachussettes or Vermont so I could open a bed and breakfast. If we went South, it would be to a coastal college town or the Atlantic Coast of Florida.
we WILL probably move to Europe within the next 5 years (whichever duty station I can get ) but I am assuming this is not the kind of move you are looking for.
the BEST thing you can do is get into your car and drive up and west. check out CT. check out the West, Put, Rockland, Orange, and Dutchess. and then make your comparisons and compromises.

Your question is a good one...because that's the problem. Where DO you go? Sure, other places have cheaper homes and taxes....but salaries are much lower so it's all relative. Plus, once a New Yorker...I just feel like I wouldn't be able to stand the slower lifestyle other places.
I'm going to disagree with you. I thought the same thing. I was born and bred on LI, lived and loved there for 28 years before I decided to take the big plunge and leave. We are in TX now and I LOVE it! Granted, I convinced my family to move down with me (super +++++) but I actually make more here than I did on LI... Quality of life is so wonderful!!!! Lots to do and see and I live in peace, no more stress of LIPA and so much other crap that was making us house poor =( We sold about 2 years ago and purchased a lovely home down here... I can't see myself ever going back to LI.... It was HARDDD but once you accept the change, you see all that ritches other staes have to offer.
Good look to the OP!

I think I would go to Baltimore. SIL lives there, it's a short drive to NY, the city is young and fun... I could see us there.

Re: If you SERIOUSLY think about moving off of LI....where would you go?
we live in CT and we love it...
we're both from LI
lower taxes, less congestion, nice cute towns, coastal and also very cose to LI
the only issue is shopping. we have alot of great shopping here but you need to really know where to go for stuff.. there aren't tons of shopping centers everywhere like , for example, jericho turnpike - where you have 5 grocery stores in a 1 mile radius and..which I actually like and miss

I am considering Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA right now
I lived in Charleston for about 6 months. Now I was PG for most of that time and it is a huge party city. Lots of bars, live music, restaurants etc.
The beaches are awesome. The traffic isn't too bad. However I did not find people friendly there at all. If you're not from Charleston you are a tourist. Thats how they feel.
We now live just outside of Raleigh in a very family oriented community. We are renting a house but would love to buy it for the location.
Our "dream" life would be to summer in NY and winter somewhere else like San Diego or Arizona, but that will probably not happen. I think we will at least raise our kids here.

I agree. When my husband and I first met we both could never imagine leaving NY and when my parents left and I stayed behind with DH neither one of us could imagine WHY on earth they wanted to move away to FL - FFWD a few years and we ended up following in their footsteps!
I can't count how many times I've gone bike riding since we've moved - that's how often we go out. Yet I can't remember the last time I rode a bike in NY.
We've gone to the beach almost every weekend since May - but we haven't had to sit in traffic to get there (15 mins to beach no traffic) or pay for parking, or pay to get on the beach, or search for an empty spot on the sand.
Our favorite restaurant down here is 5 minutes away and we sit outside on the water - it feels like a vacation.
This past weekend we went out on a boat, toured the lakes in central FL which was so cool - we saw alligators! Then we stopped off at a Natural Spring - where the water is crystal clear and you can swim in it - for FREE - it was paradise!...and in the winter it's closed for manatee observation (the manatees hang there during the winters) it's one of Florida's hidden treasures...
I can go on and on and on about new things we've found and things we do here that we never did in NY - but I won't bore everyone
The quality of life we have is so much better - it's beyond having a big house with a low mortgage payment...
It is sooooo true - other states have so much to offer...and yes Manhattan is nice and an awesome city but to be honest I don't miss it - there are so many other things to enjoy here.

Re: If you SERIOUSLY think about moving off of LI....where would you go?
It would have to be 2 hrs max from Manhattan in any direction. DH is in a NYC union that he will retire in. My inlaws moved to Lancaster County, PA 4 years ago. Their house & property is comparable to ours for about 100k less but the job market there is horrible. My BIL lost his job(after taking a HUGE paycut from his NYC job) and they are having a hard time of it. Had they stayed on LI he would still be working.

South FL
my Dad is begging me daily
most of my family lives there- but I am not ready yet
now would be the time for me to buy a condo there...hmmmmm....
seriously, I wish DH and I had the $$ to buy a vaca condo right now - I have friends in SW FL that bought new construction house for $90K.
DH and I look up RE listings for vacation condos in FL weekly... Trying to talk my Mom and brother into a joint venture
ETA: We moved to upstate NY (western NY actually). I still miss LI, but we have a great quality of life here for the most part.
