Very Beginning phases of home search...
I'm at the very beginning of searching for a home in the NYC area. I grew up on LI and since all my family is there, this is where we will mostly focus our search. I'm looking for some ideas for towns to look at with a great school district and decent (1 hr or less) commute to NYC. Also any general tips and words of wisdom about home hunting in the area - thanks!!!

Re: Very Beginning phases of home search...
Hello,
My name is Thomas Lupski, I am an affiliated Mortgage Broker with LIFamilies.com It all depends on how much you want to spend and what you are pre-approved for.
Do you have a pre-approval?
Do you have a realtor?
Once you are pre-approved and know what you are looking to spend, then a good realtor will be able to give better idea of where you should look.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me, 631-445-1781.
Best wishes!

Re: Very Beginning phases of home search...
the first thing we did (as PP suggested) was meet with a broker to get a pre-approval- that way we knew what we'd be able to pay and most importantly that we'd be able to get a mortgage...
once you know the $$$ then you can look into different areas... there's obviously the North Shore and the South Shore- both are very different and there are more expensive and more affordable areas in both...
Being within an hour of NYC basically takes you right up to the Suffolk County line with an express train- so I wouldn't go any further east than Babylon- but that's just me...

We just bought in Westchester, in Rye Brook. Fabulous school districts, good commute to NYC (to Grand Central), lots of young families-- and a cute town with shops, etc. and close to Greenwich, CT as well.
