Back to back IUIs vs. only one

Do your docs do back to back IUIs or just one? Is there evidence that shows back to back IUIs are more successful? My doc said he wants to do back to back.

Also, if your insurance covered the IUI, did it also cover the sperm washing kit? My doc's office says it's not covered even though the IUI itself is. I have to call the insurance company to confirm, but thought I'd ask here as well.

Re: Back to back IUIs vs. only one

Sperm washing wasnt covered by my ins. At first my DH had Empire and it was covered under his and then he got emblem and we were paying out of pocket for it. DH and i have separate ins thru our jobs.
My re does back to back only if on the first day the follie hasnt released. If it has, your chances dont go up. If it is hasnt released then you should have sperm sitting there and others on their way.. My re did do sonos on the day of the first iui to see if the follie had released.

Hope this helps and good luck.

My RE always suggests BD'ing after we do the IUI - they've given me the option of doing back to back's but since i'm usually several hours late to work on the day i do that, i can't do it two days in a row.
If they told me i had to, i'd do it, but they usually say it's just for extra measure.

i dont know about sperm washing and what insurance coveres.

i think it depends on ur dh count if they do back to back or 1 iui.

dh had always great numbers so the dr was confortable to just do one iui.

My RE does back to back IUIs. Also everything (sperm washing, IUI) is covered under my insurance.

Usually the protocol is don't BD the night before the IUI but you could BD the night BEFORE that.. So, lets say the IUI is for a Thursday. We could BD on Tuesday night for the last time.. then trigger Wednesday.. IUI Thursday and Friday (for example) ... Then he says we can BD whenever we like afterward.

Re: Back to back IUIs vs. only one

Each time I got PG, a total of 5 times out of 8 between my two pregnancies I had back to back unmedicated IUIs with as few as 2 and as many as 4. Yes, i had 4 back to back IUIs.

I honestly dont know if it made a difference or not. Some may say it did. Bottom line is that all it takes is one sperm.

Re: Back to back IUIs vs. only one

this has nothing to do with sperm washing or single iui vs double iuis...

But I dont know what insurance u have but someone posted here about GHI new guidelines.
They require 12 iuis b4 u move onto ivf. supposedly if u use back to back iuis they are considered 2 iuis.

Its something to think about - hopefully u wont need to go down that road but i would speak to ur dr about what would be ur protocol IF iuis dont work.. if u would move to ivf and when...

i'm not too sure what the stats say, but for DD1, b2b is what worked for us. i don't see how it could hurt to try it! DH always had fantastic numbers too. My thoughts on b2b are...you don't really have anything to lose, and everything to gain.

This is how I feel. My RE does b2b but regardless of if it's proven to be so much more effective.. it definitely can't hurt!!

Same. Although I got a DS AND a DD.

ETA: my insurance covered sperm washing. I have new ins. now and they also cover sperm washing.

Re: Back to back IUIs vs. only one

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm on Provera to bring on AF and then will begin 150mg of Clomid and schedule my first IUI cycle. My doc said he prefers to do back to back IUIs, which we will do, but I just wanted to see if that is the new norm since anyone I talk to IRL says they only had one. Hopefully this cycle will be it!
