Adoption fees are expensive
So this is upsetting me -- why is that adopting a puppy costs so much money. I've been looking to adopt a shih tzu. I've been searching petfinder and local agencies in NY. The few times I've found a pup we've liked the adoption fees are $500+ HELLO this is ridiculous, they want people to adopt BUT fees add up to the same as buying from a pet shop.
I understand those fees include vaccines, neutering, microchips etc but when you're trying to find good homes for these animals they shouldn't be asking for so much!

I think it depend the type of dog and the demand.. we adopt our from the local shelter and it was only $40 and he came with all the shots, neuter and chip

Re: Adoption fees are expensive
I adopted 2 cats for $150. It's usually $100 per cat- but you get a discount on 2.
That fee included all shots, vet testing and check up, blood work, stool testing for worms, vet check for fleas and ear mites and the spay and neuter.
They also told me that the fee goes to rescue the next cat from a kill shelter or wherever- that my cats were already rescued and paid for. So I felt good about that...
Sometimes the fees are high becuase of all the money involved in running the rescue or the shelter.

Re: Adoption fees are expensive
I'm not sure of the specific reasons besides those mentioned but something I've always considered is the food, cleanup, grooming, and shelter they provide the animals with can mount up. Depending on how long they are there for, you know? So that $500. for the animal is the only chance they will get to make back the money they fronted.
I had someone tell me that the fee is "robbery" and they are "scamming people". I just shook my head. Do you know anyone getting rich off running an adoption agency or rescue? I certainly don't.

Re: Adoption fees are expensive
If the puppy is already neutered/spayed, dewormed and has his/her first set of shots, that is a good price. Puppy shots need to be spaced out, so they can add up quickly (especially if you go to a vet that charges a fee per visit) and neutering is not cheap, so although it may seem like alot, you are paying it all upfront (versus over the next few months).
I didn't actually truly appreciate the services provided by the shelters where I adopted Teemu and Anabelle (Jack was the baby of a stray) until we got Olli from the breeder and all those vet bills/neuter piled up! It really made me appreciate all those shelters provided with my Teemu & Anabelle!

Re: Adoption fees are expensive
I agree with what some previous posters mentioned. A lot of times the fee is for them to put towards the cost of running their rescue/shelter groups. Another reason is that you're looking at a dog that is pure bred and in high demand. A lot of times you can find these pure breeds at other shelters that don't cost that much (such as North Shore).
We adopted our dog from North Shore for the bargain price of $100 ($75 adoption fee plus we donated an additional $25) . She was spayed and was up to date on all her shots.

I do think $500 is a little pricey, but it most likely includes, spaying/neutering/shots/deworming, which would all cost more than $500.
Also, it's tax deductible.
If you buy a dog from a pet shop, none of those things are included and you can deduct it on your taxes.

Re: Adoption fees are expensive
My 4 month old lab mix was $200. She only had her first set of shots. However, I know that fee included the transportation from the kill shelter to the foster home in upstate NY and her first round of shots which I am sure included a basic checkup. Also food while in the foster home.
I didn't mind cause if there was anything extra of that $200 it would enable the rescue to continue and help more dogs

If you go to a town shelter they are free. We paid $2.50 for Annie, which was just her license fee. They fixed her as well. Of course then you have to take them to the vet and have them checked out but usually they give you a discount for adopting a shelter dog. You have to rememeber though that town shelters operate on tax dollars, private shelters don't so you make up the cost somewhere.
REALLY?? What shelter was this? We had to pay to have our dog fixed and for a few other things. All in all it was about $100-$150. This was at Brookhaven Animal Shelter. Best money we ever spent
I tried going through petfinder 1st. Had some issues with the dogs being fostered and the families not wanting to give them up. And I did notice the fees were a lot higher than adopting from a shelter.

I have to agree, but that $500 you pay will help the next animal that comes into that shelter to provide them with care. Its a cycle, a good one : )

This was at Islip Animal Shelter about 5 years ago. They would not release her until she was spayed. She was a stray, in the shelter for 10 days about 8 months old, housebroken and crate trained. I never understood how anyone could have let her go.
ETA: I just had to add a picture... this is her when she came home: IMAGE
Oh my...what a cutie!
Brookhaven wouldn't release without him being neutered either. We just had to pay for it...at a discounted rate. Our little guy was a stray also...was in about 10 days and nobody ever came to claim him. I don't know why...he's an amazing dog! Whatever their reason...I'm happy they didn't. Because now he's with us
