Do you think NY has "style"?

I think it does, but I was having a conversation with a co-worker and she just came back from a month long trip to NYC and thinks she knows all about style. Chat Icon

Anyway, she got back saying when she walked outside it was all so conservative and there was no style. So I asked her what places she had been to. She said she had been all over. My point was certain places have certain style and you can't judge what the style of NYC is by walking outside only.

I kept asking what places she went to and she never answered. She is an aspiring stylist. She also buys fakes and to be honest I don't think her style is all that. But besides the point...

I don't know I was really annoyed by her comments because it seemed to be a personal attack. All she kept asking was when the last time I was in NY, which was ;ast year, but come on, NY has the best style ever (at least compared to Australia, which is lame at times).

I was really annoyed someone was telling me that NY doesn't have any fashion sense.

Re: Do you think NY has "style"?

I am not sure which parts of NYC she was hanging out in... but probably not the right parts so her trip must have been boring. I work in midtown -- for the most part, you have people wearing business attire (and in this economy, most of us aren't exactly running out and buying the latest stuff) and a bunch of tourists. We get dressed up later to go out. I'm assuming that she never went to a LES lounge, went to the 5th floor of Bergdorfs, checked out Patricia Fields or certain pockets of the city that have some really amazing boutiques and hanging out places. Just my two cents.

Yeah I said to her that she was in midtown. I was wondering if she'd ever gone downtown or to a nice lounge anywhere. No answer. All she could say was there this whole vibe on the streets was boring. And that you can catch fashion on the streets. I just rolled my eyes.

I mean come on, you have to go to places to see fashion. Again, no answer where she went. Chat Icon

Re: Do you think NY has "style"?

she can't make a blanket statement like that and not provide details.

Tell her she has no idea what she's talking about.

Maybe she needs glasses.

What!?

That's absurd.

I live in Manhattan and EVERYDAY I feel like I need to step up my 'fashion game' just to look halfway decent!!!

People here ooze style. Granted its a melting pot of different styles - conservative, risque, punk, 80's, retro, etc. - but to say that NY has no style is ridiculous.

Where did she go in NYC? Times Square and Penn Station? Chat Icon Chat Icon

There's a reason why we have a craplod of fashion shows and THE fashion institute in the country!

Re: Do you think NY has "style"?

i love NY style, you have soo many groups and different styles. And yes if your traveling in the subway during rush hour you are going to see the typical suit and sneaker bit that is just Eh.

I do not work/live in NYC anymore but when I did I actually had more of my own style that was accepted. Out on LI I really do not dress how I would like to because my job will not allow it and on the weekend you tend to get lazy since your typically in your car and in and out of places. In the city you walk around and kinda be there and show off.

Re: Do you think NY has "style"?

She must have spent her entire time in Times Square to make a statement like that.

To me I feel like NYC is a walking fashion magazine. Depending where you are in the city, you can see all types of styles. From the high end department/boutique styles on the upper west side to the fabulous laid back street chic in the village.

I find myself CONSTANTLY looking at what others are wearing when I am waiting for a bus, on a lunch break etc.

II always think "Oh I would never have thought to wear a shirt like that with a skirt like that" when I see something I like on someone. I have also stopped someone on the street to ask where she got her shoes from.

I keep tabs on what I see lots of (shoe style, colors, accessories etc) it helps me make a decision on what I want my must have item for the season to be (it was a purple snake skin bag Chat Icon )
