Crown molding and the nail holes?
What do you caulk the nail holes and seams with after you put up crown molding? I don't like the stuff my husband tried, we can still see the nail head.
Suggestions?

Re: Crown molding and the nail holes?
I just did this in my bathroom... I used joint compound (the tub with the green lid from Home Depot—I forget the name) on the nail holes. Let it dry and sand them down. Perfection! You can't see anything.
On the seams I used silicone.

Re: Crown molding and the nail holes?
we bought brackets at home depot- those got nailed into the wall & then the moulding was kind of pushed into those- worked great

Re: Crown molding and the nail holes?
the best thing is to use and air compressor and a nail gun. it will sink the nails so that the heads dont show and use some wood putty/filler. and then paint. we did this and you cant see where the holes were
use putty or joint compound like pp said in the seams you may need to sand before painting
using a reg hammer and nails - im not sure how you will get away with not seeing the head, maybe he can use and all (spelling) place on the nail and then hammer in to sink. then se wood putty

Re: Crown molding and the nail holes?
Caulk usually works. Spackle, or there is wood filler. All available at HD. Basically something that is pliable when wet, but dries to a harder consistency, and that you can paint over.

Re: Crown molding and the nail holes?
are your nail heads recessed? if not...recess the nails so the head is jsut below the top of the wood. then use wood spakel, with your finger....press it into the hole. let dry then sand and paint

Re: Crown molding and the nail holes?
Ok, to clarify, we used a nail gun, and the molding was pre-finished/painted.
So if I sanded anything down, then painted over, it wouldn't be the same color as the rest of the molding.

are the molding white? all you need is a small dab of paint to cover up the nails. also, use the wood fill or putty that dries white

Re: Crown molding and the nail holes?
You have to buy the Paintable caulk. That is what we are using and whatever touch ups we need to make the paint goes right over it with no problem.

This is what I wanted to use, but DH claimed it wouldn't work .
Thank you for everyone's responses, I'm going to try this first, then if that doesn't work, some others!!

Re: Crown molding and the nail holes?
the wood may be prefinished and painted but don't you want to paint with a semi or high gloss and match the color with the floor, window and door moldings? or did you paint before installing?

The molding is only crown molding in the bathroom. It was pre-finished white, and we didn't have to match any other moldings bc the doors and their moldings will eventually be ripped out and replaced.
We took out a 1" squared wood border that was around the ceiling of the bathroom when I painted it, and we just had to cover up a gap that the wood left.
eta: The molding we put up was painted in gloss, that is why I don't want to repaint it, it would look less 'clean' if I repainted it.
