Crown Molding

We were interested in putting crown molding throughout the first floor of the house. If we have the money (and I'm sure we wont), we might do window and door trim as well. Couple of questions if you guys can help

What kinds of crown molding are available? Does anyone have pics of crown molding in their house? I have heard of 4 inch, 6 inch, and dentil, and contractors are throwing these terms out. It is all so confusing.... Also, What did everyone do and what does that typically run for purchase and installation? Thanks for your help!Chat Icon

Best thing to do is to go to Home Depot, see what they have and go from there. Honestly, it somewhat depends upon how formal you wan that room to look, the height of the ceilings and the size of the room.
You can also use several pieces put together to get the desired look you'd like.

6 inch crown would be monstrous in a small room.
Dentil is used as an accent along with other moulding, usually in a dinigroom or livingroom or for a mantel.

I saw a great book at Lowe's all about mouldings and it had some great pics and ideas in it. Might be worth the $15. to pick it up and get ideas.

ETA: It's also good to go to one of the larger Home Depots (ex. Deer PArk) they have a wider selection and you can see what the prices are. Many contractors buy from there and just mark up the price even more.

As far as labor, usually by the square foot, number of cuts, corners and the irregularity of your walls. Our was part of the entire home redo so I don't have an itemized price for the moulding.

Re: Crown Molding

If you live near Huntington I would check out Kleet over Home Depot - jmo but I haven't heard any contractor say anything good about HD.

Re: Crown Molding

I second going to Home Depot and looking around. You'll get a better idea what you like that way.

The dentle molding in the one that looks like teeth.

We put ours up ourselves when we redid the two downstairs bedrooms. Needless to say, it is not an easy job.

I would also suggest looking through magazines. (Even mags like Pottery Barn are something to look at if you want to see moldings, for example.) I also bought an Better Homes and Gardens Book called "Architectural Details." I make it a habit to cut out the pictures I see that I like and save them in folders for future use and reference. If you find a picture of what you're looking for you can show it to your contractor.

I think that the crown molding we used is similar to the one that you used.
