Sort of spinoff to where you got your pet from...
..do you ever feel like you were "meant" to have your pet?
Sometimes I marvel at how fate kind of brought us together and I shudder to think that I might have missed out on my 2 loves if I had done just one thing differently (not walked into Petco that day they were on display, etc)
I also think about the fact that I had to lose my original cat who passed away in order to have these 2 munchkins in my life... which is sad and strange too.
It's like everytime I look at their sweet faces I think- yes, they were meant to be mine- everything happened for a reason...
Anyone else feel this way?

Absolutely....
We rescued all of our cats.
Sometimes, I think that they know that we rescued them...when they snuggle or when they lay next to me on the bed..and are glad that we did. Sounds strange...I know.

Although we purchased Brinkley, I absolutely feel like he was meant to be with us and that we rescued him from himself.
What I mean is that he had a lot of socializing and training that needed to be done, he was afraid of every new experience, skittish, fearful, submissive to a fault.
We've since helped him to find his confidence, his voice, his personality, and love him to pieces. We took the challenge and are so very glad that we did. That we didn't look at him as "too much" or go for a dog with a more outgoing personality. He's perfect for our family.

Re: Sort of spinoff to where you got your pet from...
I think about this too!
I often imagine, "what if someone else adopted them at NSAL that day?" We adopted both of my cats by chance.
For my older one, I was sick the morning we were supposed to go to NSAL. I was finally feeling better later in the day but we weren't going to go because we had this idea that the best selection would be in the morning. Well, we went anyway, and as it turns out, the kitten I took had just been put out and we were the first to see her!
With my second, we were about to leave NSAL because we didn't see any kittens we would be interested in (I think after we adopted our first we were EXTRA picky because we wanted it to get along with our current one who is perfect!) While we were walking toward the door, one of the managers said she would look in the back since they have so many back there that there's no space for out on the floor. We described the kind of cat we wanted, and out came little Zippy.
My cats are like my own children.

Re: Sort of spinoff to where you got your pet from...
yes, especially with our dog Jack. My good friend now/co-worker at the time adopted him from NSAL when she moved in with a guy she was breifly engaged to. with in a year their relationship failed & she was forced to move into a small apartment that was not pet friendly. At that same time Rich & I were a few weeks away from being married. Rich & my stepdaughter REALLY wanted a dog. Rich had mentioned several times that he wanted to look into getting a border collie, around that time my friend starting asking everyone at work if they had any ideas on who might want her dog. I asked her to tell me about him & bring in a picture. I told Rich about him & he said he wanted to go & meet him. I had a dress fitting or some WR thing so I couldn't go. Rich & Nicole went & met Jack & loved him & brought him home. He's not exactly a border collie but he's adorable & I could not imagine our family or life without him. Plus it created a bond between me & my friend & we've gotten really close over the years. This September will be 7 years that we've had Jack & we estimate that he's about 9 years old now.
here's Jack with his girlfriend Honey the pug(my friends new dog)
here's jack during one of our many construction projects
as for our chickens and our rabbits, i love them all & i like to think we were meant to be together.

I went away for the weekend and I missed my furry babies.
I had a great time, and was stuck in traffic on the Belt Parkway yesterday afternoon. I just wanted to see my kids.

Re: Sort of spinoff to where you got your pet from...
Absolutely, with both of them.
With Zoey, we got her when she was about 2 from Little Shelter, she had been there for 3 months. I could not imagine how someone could have passed over her, or for that matter, how her previous owner could have abused her. But she was there for 3 months because she was meant to be a part of my family.
Before Schultz came to us, I had seen a puppy on petfinder.com with a rescue in Rockland County, applied and was about to drive up there (2 hours?) to go get him. Something was nagging me about the woman at the rescue, so I called to confirm direction, her son answered the phone (about 12 years old or so), and through conversation I found out she gave away the puppy I was supposed to get and was going to let me come up because they had other puppies. She had no intention of telling me. I was devastated.
Three months later Arleen from Little Shelter called me, she had shep pups, I had first pick. I went right over and fell in love. Schultz was meant to be with me. I will never get upset about not getting a particular dog again. If they are meant to be with me then that is how it will be.

Re: Sort of spinoff to where you got your pet from...
Absolutely.
My cousin is basically abusing her dog that she got from North Shore. He is cooped up alone in the house all day. He is allowed out twice a day for a few minutes, chained to a wall to relieve himself and then kept inside. Now, he has a shock collar on 24/7 to keep him from barking.
Everytime I see him, I cry - to think that someone so horrible could have taken Brutus from the store that day makes me physically ill - I can't even think about it b/c it will drive me crazy and I have burst into tears holding him just imagining it.

Definitely.... others have commented on it too.
Our vet has even said to us that it was fate that we were brought together. He said he'd never seen anyone care for a pet the way we have... it was such validation for us because we've gone thru so much trying to get Cooper healthy and people always thought we were nuts for doing it and spending a small fortune on him. But he's our bubby and we would do it all over again if we had to.

Re: Sort of spinoff to where you got your pet from...
100% yes.
My dog was born to my dad's two dogs in the Dominican Republic. Over there, there are a TON of stray dogs, most of which are female - the females are just not wanted in DR.
I took one of the girl puppies and my brother took one of the other ones.
DH and i constantly talk about what could have happened to our doggie if we didn't take her.
And just recently, we found she needed hip AND knee surgery. We charged the surgery - we'd do anything for her. Even if my brother had taken my dog and I had taken his when we first chose the doggies, I know that my Viva would NOT have the same life we have given her. Not that Viva's sister is in a bad place, but I don't know that my brother would have spent the money to get her the operation.
She was meant to be with us and we can't imagine life without her.

Re: Sort of spinoff to where you got your pet from...
We adopted our dog from Brookhaven Animal Shelter. I chose that place because after looking online for a long time they kept posting that they were overcrowded. That weekend they posted that they were beyond overcrowded and were going to have to start putting animals down. So we went there.
He was a 3 year old, 70 lb pitbull looking mix. He had been at the shelter for 5 months when we got there. I'm sure he would have been put down being that he was older, big and part pit.
He's the best dog I ever had and such a mush. Sometimes I look at him and think how sad it would have been if we didnt go that day and rescue him.

Re: Sort of spinoff to where you got your pet from...
Without a doubt...
Espresso picked me...I was really interested in another kitten in the cage and he did everything in his power to get my attention - to finally slipping through the bars and following us. My mother thought I was crazy, but how could I resist him after that?
With Misty, we put our names on the waiting list of the Weimaraner Rescue based on the fact that it could take six months to get a dog (as per the website). We had just gone to contract on the house and figured the timing would be perfect. Two days later, I get an e-mail from the Rescue asking if I'm interested in this dog that the owners are going to put down if they can't get it adopted in the next week or so. The fosters were full, so there was noone to even foster her. We agreed to drive into Queens and meet her, fell in love and have the sweetest, most wonderful companion we could have imagined.
