My dog can really be such a dominant jerk

I gave him a busy bone a week and a half ago. Normally he eats them right away. Instead, with this one , he has decided to guard it the entire week and just carry it around. Its really annoying bc anytime you walk near it, or walk past it, he rushes over to it and grabs it. Its a very dominant thing.

Well today he was holding it in his mouth and he growled at me when I put my hand near his mouth. So I got mad, pried it out of his mouth and threw it in the garbage! Chat Icon

Good that you took it away. He has to understand that you're the boss, not him, so you can touch his stuff whether it's a prized possession or not.

well, we put the collar on him only when people are coming over or when we go for walks so we dont have to use a leash. He's been great so we onjly use it when we know he is going to have an issue. What I should have done, was put the collar on him and practice "leave it" with the bone. I let this go on for a week and a half bc I do feel bad - the weather hasnt been good so i really havent walked him in a while bc I dont want to bring the baby out. So he is severely underexercised. So at first I was going to just let him love his bone and walk around with it, but then he ruins it with the growl! Chat Icon

It is amazing though, he has been amazing with the baby. No issues at all there. I will just have to keep a close eye on him when she starts crawling/walking and can bother him. I will do my best to teach her boundaries, but it wont be easy! But he always gets excited around her and licks her face.

I would have done the same thing at first, then thought about it after.. you can always try again and practice discipline..

It's also good to take a bone away and give it back to him at random times when you feel like it. It shows your ownership of the bone.
