Painful ovarian cyst ruptures

Do any of you ladies have this pretty frequently? Usually its associated with having PCOS -- and my ruptures are just amazingly painful. They've landed me in the hospital before and I practically pass out from the pain when I get them.

My doc had me on BCP to help control the frequency--but now that I've been off of it for the past 3 mos or so, they are back with a vengeance and they are PISSSED! I was hoping I would O this month and maybe we can start trying, but I'm feeling the all too familiar pains of it...and I'm thinking I'm gonna have one in a few hours.

I've had them like clockwork now when I was supposed to be O-ing -- Nov. 10, Dec. 11, and now this month. I hate it so much.

Re: Painful ovarian cyst ruptures

i had one and like you mentioned, i landed in the hospital because of it. They actually opened me up to operate on it (to remove it) but it burst during surgery...

this was before i was put on the birth control pill though....from that day forward, pills were my thing.

SINCE then, i haven't had any further issues. I was truly worried about it when i went off the pill in March...but i was okay.

Can you speak to your doc about this? Did you let him/her know you were going off the pill? I know you are trying to be careful and not get 'too into' this whole thing because you are protecting yourself (and i applaud that, sincerely)...but this may be something that has to be looked at.

Re: Painful ovarian cyst ruptures

hi jess

well we are going for a new doctor and seeing them on the 12th. my last OB/GYN is retiring from obstetrics. my first gyno i was seeing for years just kind of said "well take BCP and we'll go from there" but i still would sometimes get the ruptures even on BCP - and when i went to see him, he'd just say "well as long as they aren't over 3 or 4cm, you're fine" Chat Icon i eventually left him, and went to my current doc, and now he's retiring, so i have to meet with the NEW doc now.

so i'm wondering what he will say. but in the meantime, i'm hating the $hit out of my body right now!!!

hey!

WOW - you had the ruptures EVEN ON birth control.... that's a LOT to deal with, all those hormones AND pain - i am so truly sorry...

it's odd that the doc never saw any 'problem' with that.. I know when i was on them, it took us a 'while' to figure out which pill was right for me, because on a few, i still had pains (my main reason, other than the cysts was the HORRIFYING pain of my period, i was on more painkillers than most addicts at the time)...so we played with a few brands before finding the 'right' one..so i'm surprised the doc didn't do that with you...but who knows - as i'm not a doctor....

did they ever tell you anything you can do for the pain - since this was a 'normal' occurence for you?? Can you OD on tylenol, use warm compresses??

yeah i'm convinced my 1st doc is an idiot. i'm pissssed i was with him for so long. he just kept telling me that it just "happens" sometimes--never mentioned PCOS at all, and everytime i would have one and ask why its happening...he would just say "it just happens" Chat Icon it wasn't until my current doc- that i realized what it was that was causing it, and everything.

The first doc would only would prescribe Motrin 800mg for me and that's it. I wanted to be like "give me something STRONGER YOU JERK!" but he would only give me that.

my current doc gave me a different BCP and the ruptures stopped when i was put back on Ortho Tri-cyclen (i was on Yaz before), and now that i'm off BCP completely, each month I've had them like clockwork.

ya know what i would do - seriously? I know your appointment is on the 12th - but call the office now. Ask to speak with the doc (even though you've never met him) - leave a message that it's rather urgent... Explain what is happening and that you need to know if there is anything you can do.. this is pain that you DO NOT have to go through...and can be helped.... Even if he says - come in today or tomorrow - that would help too...because then maybe he can examine you...

the WORST possible thing to come of you calling is that they say, 'he'll call you back'... you have nothing to lose...

i hope it doesn't come to that either - but if it does - please, call....again, NOTHING TO LOSE....but the pain..

i understand that you may not want to feel like a 'worry wart' with a new doc, but if you are feeling what you have before, it's a problem and one your doc can help solve!!!!

Re: Painful ovarian cyst ruptures

You should ask your doctor about Metformin. I took it when ttc ds. The first couple months on it got rid of my cysts and the third month I started o'ing again. I got pregnant my 6th cycle on it (I think). I am now back on to ttc#2. I didn't need to start for another month since we will be ttc in May/June but I couldn't take the pain anymore. And just to warn you when you are ttc hpt may not be accurate. If you have a large cyst it may give a false +. My gf has this happen. She was going into surgury to have a cyst removed and they did a test to make sure she wasn't pregnant. It came back + and it was immpossible she was pregnant since she was a virgin. Good luck Chat Icon

Re: Painful ovarian cyst ruptures

I know we talked about it, but I have some serious PCOS with cysts that rupture practically monthly. In fact, I hadn't ovulated on my own in a few years.

I, too, saw my OB/GYN and was put on BC to "control it" - aka mask my real cycles. I felt like they really had no idea what I was dealing with. I saw 2 Drs and a nurse practitioner and was told that PCOS is really only an issue if we were trying to have kids, and that chances of me conceiving without IVF was slim to none because i was completely anovulatory.

After 3 painful bleeding ruptures in the past year and a very symptomatic summer (rashes, weight gain, hirsutism, moodiness, etc), I made an appt with a reproductive endocrinologist in Syosset that has written and researched quite a bit on PCOS.

I was jogging on my treadmill for an hour EVERY DAY, eating carefully, and still gaining weight. I was seriously ballooning. I got all the way up to a size 16 and freaked out...that's when I called the Dr.

He put me on Metformin and recommended a strict low-GI diet very similar to south beach. I went on amazon and ordered a few books and cookbooks and I really worked hard to stick to it. I had no white flour, no refined sugars, no alcohol, hormone-free meats, etc.

After 2 months on the medicine and diet, I got my period NATURALLY! No provera! I was still having painful cyst issues though, so i had a small procedure that involved stabbing me in the gut with a really long needle and draining the cysts on my right ovary. (I had 2 big ones sitting on top/on the outside of the ovary, in addition to some inside. you could actually FEEL them when you touched my ovary area!) I donated all of those size 16 clothes - I can't believe I fit in those just a few months ago.

I'm now PG with twins. No one tells me I can't do something. Chat Icon

Re: Painful ovarian cyst ruptures

Yeah Nicole--your first doctor experiences sound very similiar to my doc---he was telling me over and over again, its not a big deal unless we want to have kids...and kind of ignored it.

One time like 10 years ago I visited an Endocrinologist. The first time I went to a gyno when I was 18, they did bloodwork and they called and said one of my numbers was off and I went, when I went to the endo--they did some type of testing and said I was fine. (Still have no idea what was "off" but they seemed satisfied.) So now I guess thats a sign that this might have been an issue for the past 10 years and I didn't even realize it.

I'm going to my gyno and gonna ask them to do a full work up on me and take it from there....I guess I might have to see an Endo now.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

ETA: I had ballooned up to a size 20-22 -- but have been losing weight and working out and I'm down to a size 14/16 (depending on the clothes) - so I'm hoping this will make a difference with the PCOS...but MAN it is HARD as HELL to lose weight!

Since I was 15, I have had a lot of trouble with cysts; they always would rupture and I would be in so much pain that I would have to be carried into the hospital and I would be in the ER for hours and hours; sometimes overnight. I was put on BC when I was 16 because I found out from not getting my period for like 9 months. I aways was regular with AF on BC and thankfully when I stopped when I got married, AF stayed regular. My Dr always told me I would be a "first nighter" when I asked if I would have trouble getting pregnant; obviously that wasn't teue because we're on month 3, so I am starting to get nervous now. I had a laparoscopy; they said I had endometriosis and a coloscopy ? if thats what its called; scraping, etc.. I have been ok knock on wood with the exception of a few times they ruptured, but never was diagnosed with PCOS, and still wondering whats the deal with not getting pregnant yet; if it has to do with that or not. Chat Icon so I feel for u.sorry so long.

Not to scare you but you can have PCOS and have reg cycles. I am proof of that. Have your doctor run your bloodwork and so a scan of oyur ovaries. You can have cysts and still get af you just won't O. It's very frustrating but treatable.

I just had one of these PAINFUL cysts. It was on and off for a few weeks and if I had to sneeze...OMG! I thought I would pass out! My Dr. wants to see me in one month again after I go through a cycle and to see if the cyst is any smaller. She said there was some fluid(not sure if this means that it burst already?).
I'm confused now as far as getting pregnant. I asked her if this has anything to do with me not being able to get pregnant and she said no. What I've been reading so far, it seems to be that you don't O when you have these cysts?
