Name opinion

Hello: I am 20 weeks now but not having my level 2 until Feb 6, so hopefully we can find out the gender soon and get the names finalized. Please let me know your opinions on our possible name picks. – Especially on the boy’s name since we’ve gotten some negative reactions; I can understand if some people don’t like it and won’t be their personal pick, but is it really a ridiculous name that the poor child might get teased about it.

Chat Icon Chaucer Andrew - (DH’s pick. It's very unusual name, so even though DH has wanted this name for years we get a lot of negative comments from his friends about his choice so we are still debating if we will go ahead with it - We also have a DD who is 12 and she does not like it either but I think is from the teasing DH got from his friends) At first, I was not very much into it but to be honest I don't think it's bad, and like that its different and it sounds very masculine/elegant to me. I think it’s a nice name but DH could influence me, my major problem would be that I am Spanish and my family may have trouble pronouncing correctly but I thought a nickname would take care of that

Chat Icon Alyssa Ann (Ann is in honor of DH's deceased aunt, Alyssa is just a name we like, was not on our top list but most of the ones we liked were already taken by family or friends and we are loving it now.

I really like Alyssa Ann, but I could honestly see Chaucer getting teased. How about Andrew Chaucer instead of Chaucer Andrew?

Re: Name opinion

I will preface by saying it shouldn't matter what other people's opinions are b/c NO MATTER WHAT someone is going to love it and someone is going to hate it - YOU and YOUR DH have to love it and no one else ...........

How do you pronounce Chaucer?
The way I'm saying it in my head, it sounds like a German Shepard's name ........sorry !! -

Re: Name opinion

Chaucer makes me think of Chaucer/The Canterbury Tales, so first thought is a little high brow/scholarly but I don't dislike it.

And considering all the "new" names out there, it really doesn't strike me as a prime target for teasing.

Re: Name opinion

I love the name Alyssa Ann....Chaucer is a little tough and not something i'd choose but that's the beauty of names! Its your baby!

DH and I have decided when we have a baby that we aren't telling anyone our name choices b/c we don't want negative comments...It would sway me and I don't think that's right. Go for the name you want!

I have one girl name I think i want.. not telling this time so i dont hear the negatives about it and change my mind again. Chat Icon

Vivi I'm crashing just to give you my opinion - I loooove the name Alyssa Ann! Great choice. For the boy's name, the FIRST thing that popped in my mind was your ethnic background (because we're both hispanic and you & I have met at a GTG before Chat Icon ) and I know for me & DH, we have had a hard time thinking of names for when we actually have kids because we want our hispanic families to not completely BUTCHER the names, you know what I mean? I am trying to say Chaucer in my head the way most of my family would say it, and I think that they would just completely distort it.

Reminds me of a friend of mine that named her son Dylan but she has a strong hispanic accent and while I LOVE that name (it was one of my top picks since I was little!), I always wondered why she picked it when she can't even pronounce it. Obviously she loved the name, but it sounded weird when she would call out to him etc.

So, just something to think about. Honestly, you CAN'T please everyone with whatever name you pick, so you guys should go with the names you love. Chat Icon

Re: Name opinion

Thank you everyone for your opinions, I do have to think about this one.

Yesi, You are very right... so far my mom can not even remember the name so this is going to be a hard one- even though she is having a hard time pronouncing the name she tells me not to worry and that if DH loves the name so much, I should go ahead with it. However, I will discuss again with DH even if we both like it it won't sound so nice when in fact there will be plenty of chances for the name to be "butchered"Chat Icon worst part is I can't even blame my family alone, I am afraid that my accent will come out as well when telling people my child's name.

I will be extremely happy with either a boy or a girl but as DD says maybe if it is a girl it would save us from name trouble Chat Icon

Re: Name opinion

Don't worry about your family butchering the name ........I actually LOVED that as a kid -
Listening to the way my Grandpa pronounced my name and my sister's w/ his ridiculously thick Italian accent -

Marisa was "Ma - DEEEES"
and Alexis was .....god I don't even know !! I can't phonetically spell it the way he said it Chat Icon but it was really cute -

Chaucer who wrote Canterbury Tales? Are you honoring him? His first name was Geoffrey, which is also a nice name.

Re: Name opinion

How do you prononunce it? Personally I don't like it. It is a little too unusual, and I could see most people mis-pronouncing it, and not just your Spanish speaking family. I do love the name Andrew though. With that said, go with what ever you like. It's your child!

Love Alyssa Ann!!

ITA! I also woudl constantly think of the poet William Chaucer who wrote The Canterbury Tales. It just sounds "old" to me. I would go with Andrew and Chaucer as the middle name if you had to use it.
