Re: dogs and periods

My little dog's lasted one mth, bleeding and spotting. I had doggie undies for her, with a pad on it. Not much you can do, other than keep her clean and safe from male dogs.Chat Icon

Re: dogs and periods

Well she is more or less indoors all the time, we live in an apartment. How often do they get it?

They can get it twice a year but for her health and safety, spaying is a good choice. We got caught with one heat, planned on fixing her that mth. We fixed her then 2 mths after the bleed, since vets don't want to spay too close to the period b/c of the increased blood flow to the area and risk of hemorrhage.

Spaying her will help prevent breast and uterine cancer. All my pets that were spayed did not get reproductive cancers. My one cat (when I was a kid) who wasn't ever spayed (lived indoors) developed horrible mammary tumors and died young b/c of them.

So please consider spaying even if indoors.Chat Icon

Oh great! Yes reshedule. I would make the appt about 1.5 mths to 2 mths after the end of the bleeding (assume 3wks to one mth). Also mention it to your vet. Chat Icon

Yes, and whatever you do, do not laugh at your dog while she is wearing them! I read this on some doggie boards, not to embarass the pet. So I tried not to giggle at my girl, but she looked SOOO cute.

In fact, her doggie underwear was a denim one and I just used women's panty liners instead of buying the expensive doggie liners.

I also do not like to be laughed at when I have my period and I'm wearing my granny panties! So I can sympathize with the doggie! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Tallulah had gotten hers also before we had her spayed. I used preemie diapers with a hole cut out for her tail.

Good! I too didn't think it would be too much to wipe up around the house, but it was a LOT. And my male dog started peeing on the blood drops! So I had to get the undies. Glad it helped you out!Chat Icon
