Camcorder help--do I need high def??

Hey girls...so we're finally on to buying a camcorder...but there are sooo many choices out there and I don't really want to break the bank with this one...but my question to you is...do you think paying more for a high def cam is worth it..or will my memories be just fine without it...also, do I need special software with hd cam's? I started researching and I'm sooo confused...also the price diff is so much! Reg cam=500 HD=1000...so...whatdya think? Thanks!!

DH and I are going through the same thing right now. We are asking for a camcorder for Christmas and have been trying to figure out which one we want. My DH is most concerned about the hard drive space (must be 60GB or more to avoid disks and tapes). We will probably not be getting HD because of the price. HTH!

IMO they are still the newest type of camcorder out there, therefore they are way too expensive to buy. Unless you have a high def tv and plan to burn high definition dvd's in order to save your memories I'd say it's not worth it. If you are computer savvy I'd go with a hard drive camcorder so you can burn your memories on to a full size dvd or if you don't want to have to deal with the computer I'd recc a Sony mini dvd camcorder. That is what we have and it is so convenient and the small dvd's just pop in to most dvd players. HTH!

Re: Camcorder help--do I need high def??

We have been researching camcorders a lot lately as well. My parents are going to get us one for Christmas. We decided to go for the HD camera since our TV is HD and the quality is better. I did a lot of research and checked Consumer Reports and we decided on a Sony.

Camcorder

There are some great sales going on now too.

Happy Shopping!

DH the tech man, will not buy anything but HD. We have all HD everything, so he is all about the HD. But the prices are nuts.

Try Tigerdirect.com they have great items for the best prices. We have done really well there.

You have to keep in mind in order to watch these videos back in HD, you will need to connect your camera to your TV, or play them on the computer connected to the TV or burn them to a BluRay disc using HD tools of some sought. Defiantly not for the avg mom.

Just an FYI...any questions, feel free to ask.

We are going with the HD camcorders. We were going to ask for one for Christmas but they are just so much money. We decided to just buy one ourselves before the baby comes. My DH is really into electronics and he wants to buy the most updated technology. We also have a HD TV and the video quality will look much better on the TV.

This is the one we will be getting. It seems the Sony and the Canon where the best. We liked the SOny better when we went to look at them.

Same here. We liked the Sony best when we saw them in the store. I agree with you that it is worth the investment.

Have you checked out the Flip MinoHD at all? It's really small and only $229. We have a regular camcorder but I think I am going to purchase the Flip before the baby gets here to have with me at all times.
