Spinoff To Godparent Thread (with poll)

I'm curious about something Godparent related (obviously)....

For us - Dave has a sister and I have a brother. They should be our 'natural choices' for Godparents I guess....(because of who they are)....

HOWEVER...

i'm not saying i don't love Dave's sister, not saying HE doesn't, but she doesn't have much involvement in our lives at ALL (unless she needs something and that's not a joke). If she needs a babysitter, we get a call, otherwise - we only really see her on Holidays and Birthdays..

Here's my OTHER problem...Dave is Godfather to her first child...

do we HAVE to pick his sister???? My brother is almost automatic...we've always been close and i know he'd be honored....Dave agrees with this choice too...

We have a close friend who we'd really like to ask....but would that cause a problem with his family ya think??

Sorry this turned out so long! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Even if your SIL would have a stink about it, I'd go with your instinct! In my family, it would be typical to ask my oldest brother, but I'm not as close to him so I'm not.

i always like to remind everyone what a Godparent is really supposed to be...
i have a sister, who has never been to a church in her life..she wouldnt even be considered an option as Godparent for one of my children...

Godparents are supposed to be spiritual guidance to our kids, a parent God gives to them if we are unable for a time to guide them in a certain way (which im guessing if someone is choosing to Christen their child in the first place, they are committing to a life choice)

I would LOSE IT, if someone had ANYTHING to say about such a personal decision...

Godparents arent supposed to be "automatically" named, and if your dh's family has an issue with that, which knowing how the usual family thing goes they probably will, ask them to explain to you what they think a Godmother is, and how seriously they think their daughter would be able to commit to that since youre not very close with her anyway lol
Im sure they wont be able to answer lol

In answer to your question..i do think theyll be upset, though if it was up to me, i wouldnt really think twice..and couldnt care less loll...i would choose who we thought was "right" for it

I would go with your and Dave's instinct. Personally I don't think that godparents need to be family members but that is because of my own experience. My godparents are very good friends of my parents and I am extremely close with them. We plan on choosing two friends for our baby.

i totally agree on the "no"....

however i have a similar dilema to you. my sister has 2 kids. 1st one godparents were me and her husbands brother. the second one was my husband, and her husbands cousin(since the brother isnt married)....she i believe looks at it more as an honorary title- rather than the actual job.

NOW...... present day. My sister does not go to church, she believes the priests are corrupt, and has lost faith. her husband takes the kids every sunday. i could see a HUGE arguement coming if shes not selected. But how can I select someone who will not spiritually guide my child. Yet, at the same time, there are no other females that I am close to, that are very religious(outside my 60 y.o. aunt who is a eucharistic minister)

My dh and i go to church every weekend. my dh's brother at least goes on the holidays and still believes in the church. Dh' and his brother both went to catholic school up through high school and dh and I take this very seriously. dh even just joined the pastoral council to become more involved in the parish......

we take this so seriously too which is why it upsets me when people "expect" to be chosen not based on their faith, but on their familial position...
i dont have alot of very religious friends, most people my age and my dh's age (we are 31) arent very religious and dont attend mass or have much faith..we happen to be very involved in our church, and consider it an honor to have our dd baptised there..
that being said, i dont know if youre aware of this, but you dont HAVE to choose two people who are practicing catholics, you may choose ONE practicing as a Godparent, and the other will stand up as a sponsor..
after all, how can you tell the priest that this person is a practicing Catholic if theyre not..and they will ask!!
So, maybe thats another option for you??

It not just that she doesnt go to church. Its that she is Anti- church, see's no point in it, and after that I dont know how much she actually believes in Jesus and god(theres other issues there). if my kid talks to her shes not going to encourage them to go to church, not going to encourage them to pray. I just dont see where the positive influence for advice would occur for my child

My BIL is going to be Chat Icon 's godfather and he's a complete pagan....LOL But seriously he is anti church, etc.

He's my DH's best friend and a very good friend to me though. We're picking him more because I believe he would be a good role model for my son not because he'll take him to church every Sunday if I die.

do you know that for sure? Just because she does not believe does not mean she can/won't respect your beliefs and try to help instill them in your child. Since this is so important to you (for good reason!) I think you should talk to her about your concerns and see where you end up.
