Did this ever happen to anyone else?
Last night I went to the Dr. for my 13 week appt - He couldn't 'find' the heartbeat with that little microphone thing that they smoosh around your belly ......He kept telling me not to get upselt .......HOW do you NOT get upset??
He finally did a sono and everything was fine ......
But really? I almost had a freakin' heart attack !!
He said it could be b/c my uterus still hasn't come up from the pelvic bone yet (or soemthing like that) All I really heard was "Baby is OK"

Re: Did this ever happen to anyone else?
Before my dr tried the doppler on me, he warned me it might be too soon, that the uterus doesn't pop out of the pelvis at the same time for everyone. And sure enough, he could not find it, this was 12 weeks. He told me he would do an ultrasound but I had just had my ultrascreen the day before and we saw it all, so we decided we didn't need one that all was ok.
Next visit, which was 16 weeks he found it with the doppler. So yes, it's normal.

Re: Did this ever happen to anyone else?
My Dr. used to tell me not to get upset if she couldn't find the heartbeat. Sometimes that early, it's hard to find it. We actually had rented a doppler so we can listen at home, and it sometimes took me quite a while to find the heartbeat. Now that I'm further along and the baby is much bigger, I can find it immediately.

Re: Did this ever happen to anyone else?
totally normal....i rented my own doppler at 13 wks and it was very hard to find the heartbeat at first...would take me like 20 mins....started to get easier as the weeks went by and now at 17wks when i put the doppler on my belly I can find it pretty much immediately. Your uterus is so low at the beginning that it's hard to find. Thank goodness you got to have a sono right there or you would have been freaking!

This happened to me too! .. I left there crying that day, and I'm so glad DH was with me, because I was soo upset. I thought I lost the baby, but then they saw him on the sono machine. And now I'm 27 weeks, and everything is still good!
Not sure why it happens, but I guess sometimes it does, but don't worry!

Re: Did this ever happen to anyone else?
Maybe it is because it is early, my doc didnt even use a doppler until I was 16 weeks and even then it took a minute

Re: Did this ever happen to anyone else?
That happened to me once early in my pregnancy with DS. They did a sono and everything was fine but I was very stressed until I saw and heard that heartbeat.

Re: Did this ever happen to anyone else?
I know its hard not to be upset but its common that they can't pick up the heart beat via doppler at that age.
It was even longer for me. My midwife couldn't get the heart beat on doppler until about 18 weeks because I had an anterior and retroverted uterus!
The only good thing I had that made me somwhat calm is that I started feeling the baby early, 12W 3D!

Re: Did this ever happen to anyone else?
that happened to me and the doc flipped out his face turned all red and he got really nervous! i was about 20 weeks, I knew baby was fine becasue I could feel him moving around. I think he shifted away from the doppler bc supposedly they don't like the sound of it.

This happened to me also the first time she tried the doppler. It really freaked me out and she was about to do a sono when she finally found it. Doc told me a lot has to do with the babys position.

Re: Did this ever happen to anyone else?
Yep this happened to me..
She kept looking and looking. She was talking to me and the hubby and then she got really quiet while she tried to find the heartbeat.
For me it was later .. like 22-24weeks.
She finally found it and then did a quick sono. I guess my girl was playing hard to get. But it was all fine. Science is a scary thing, it gives us so much, but lets face it.. pregnancy is still a bit of a mystery!

The dopplers can be "distracted" by all sorts of sounds.....the placenta, your intestines. It gets easier later on when the baby is higher and closer to the skin.

That happened to me at my final appointment and caused me so much stress that I had to be induced! It was terrifying- I am sorry you had to go through that

Re: Did this ever happen to anyone else?
Yes.
At 12 week appt, Dr could not pick it up with fetal monitor alone. I alsmost lost it, but she said she wasn't worried since in her words "was trying to pick up a HB on something about an inch in size that was bouncing all over the place."
Nonetheless, they did a US right away to be sure, and there was my guy moving around like crazy.

Re: Did this ever happen to anyone else?
Yup, my Dr. did ultrasounds for the first few appointments just for that reason. It's really hard to hear the heartbeat through the pelvic bone. I also had some extra cushion there which I don't think helped either.

Re: Did this ever happen to anyone else?
This happened to me a few times apparently my placenta was in front of him which was also the reason I never felt movement until around 22 weeks.
