Update: We had to put one of the ferrets down

Smokey is 7 yrs old. A normal life span for a ferret is 7 - 9 years. Smokey has not eaten or drank anything. He's very lethargic and has lost an incredable amount of weight in a short period of time. He's actually showing the same symptoms our ferret Mushy had when he died. (ferrets are very prone to cancer and that is how we lost Mushy)DH is taking him to the vet this afternoon and we both fear the worst. We've actually been preparing ourselves that he wont be returning home

Our other ferret Stinky is 12 which is a huge rarity for a ferret since their life spans are not that long. His back legs dont work as well as his front legs, he has a hard time moving around and is not as quick as he used to be. He's still eating and drinking very well but we feel his time is limited. DH is taking him as well to the vet just to get looked at. We think he'll be ok and it's his age catching up to him.

DH just left with the two ferrets. He called me into the bedroom and asked if I wanted to say good bye to Smokey just in case. I started bawling. He looked a lot worse then he did yesterday.

I cant believe how an animal so tiny can make you cry like a baby

I'm so sorry to hear that! I absolutely LOVE ferrets. We used to have 4 of them. All boys and all had different personalities. They were soooo sweet. I know how feel though. We didn't know their lifespan when we first got one. Then we fell in love with him and just kept adding more and more to the crew. They also each died from one of the 3 main diseases that they die from. Mostly cancer. Only 1 of them we were able to get him surgery and it prolonged his life for a while longer. We cried everytime one of them died. They were our boys! I wish we could have them now, but the dogs would eat them alive! Here are some hugs!

DH just called me, Smokey had to be put down. He had a tumor that just ate all his insides. He had a stomach ulcer and was digesting his blood. He had no fat or muscle to him. His organs were failing. Their was just nothing to do for him.

Stinky for his age is in good health. He has low blood sugar but the vet gave us some stuff to put in his water that will help him. For a 12 yr old ferret he's in good shape

Stinky for his age is in good health. He has low blood sugar but the vet gave us some stuff to put in his water that will help him. For a 12 yr old ferret he's in good shape

i am so sorry for your loss. i just lost my ferret kiki a couple of weeks ago, and it was so hard, so i know what you are going through. and she was only 4 yrs old. i'm sure smokey had a very happy life. it is amazing that stinky is 12! his sugar level can definitely be controlled, so he'll be fine.
