Anyone working from home?

I've been talking to a headhunter I use and my industry (I'm in Online Ad Sales) a lot of jobs can be home office jobs, which if I can get one, would be IDEAL! My headhunter advised me to still get help even if I decide this route bc she said it may even be harder than going to the office a few days a week....
So, anyone BTDT, or is planning to work from home and still get help, I just find it unnecessary!

Re: Anyone working from home?

I think it depends on the type of business you'll be doing from home. I do all of DH's paperwork so I can pretty much make my own schedule. BUT if I knew I was going to have to be on conf. calls, etc I would def have help in the house or put DC in daycare.

Bosses want to know you're working from home, they don't want to hear crying babies, or you're out grocery shopping, etc.

Good luck!

Re: Anyone working from home?

It is my hope to work from home, I am trying now to get freelance contacts, and am also hoping my job will work with me on this.

If I do the work from home route, I will probably hire a nanny/babysitter for a few hours a couple of times a week - like a college kid to help out and take care of the babies while I get work done.

Re: Anyone working from home?

DS is almost 2 months old. there's no way i would be able to take care of him and work at home. it if it part time and the hours are flexible, it would be possible. but full time or rigid hours would be impossible for me--you never know when he will be crying, needing to eat, etc.

it's possible under the right circumstances IMO

Re: Anyone working from home?

Its definitely full time, and her point was exactly that, that you're going to have to juggle the baby's needs and then your bosses needs. I will be on calls a lot of the time, but I just don't see the point in hiring a full time nanny, maybe someone for a couple of hours a day when I know things get busy...Then again, I won't know what I'm going to need once I'm in the situation I guess....

Re: Anyone working from home?

I work from home 3 days a week. I go into the city 2. My 2 DDs are home with me (with no help) 2 of the 3 days. They are 3 and 1.5. It is HARD! When the baby comes and I go back to work, the 2 olders ones will have to go to daycare 5 days a week and I will have the baby home with me the 3 days I work from home. It really depends on the job I guess. My office needs to be able to get in touch with me throughout the day. I also have numerous conference calls a week can be very stressful. I try to get as much done when I am in the office and sometimes need to work at night. My days inthe office are much, much easier, but I love that I can be home with the kids. Also my Blackberry is my best friend. It allows me more flexibility in that I can leave the house and am not glued to my laptop in anticipation of an email.

Yup, my job is very similar, and even without a baby I'm glued to my blackberry! But thank you so much for the personal insight, I appreciate it!

I will be working from home very shortly. I have here and there but this will be all the time.

I am very excited. I have a very easy going child, always have (knock wood) so for me it was easy and I know will be easy to do. You will have to see what kind of child you have.

Re: Anyone working from home?

I'm gonna try and start my own business from home very shortly so that when the baby is born (Feb) I will have had some type routine of sorts.

I intend on having part-time help so when I have to leave the house for business, I don't have to worry.

Cross your fingers for me that it works out b/c I'm scared to death.

Re: Anyone working from home?

I am in technology sales for higher education. I get a lot of leads but can "batch" most of my work. Don't tell anyone but I don't work "that" hard!Chat Icon I am on commission and basically if someone orders a large volume of my hardware I make a big comission check, if not I make my salary. It's not necessarily related to how hard I work you know? BUT I have 401K and insurance through my job so it is well worth it to keep it. I also use Salesforce which helps me a LOT woth following up with people and sending form e-mails to contact people for the 1st time. I do demonstrations over the web through Webex which my company encourages as I have a large territory not conducive to driving. I control when I travel and am not traveling after October

I plan on hiring someone 2-3 days a week as a "mother's helper" type of person so my DH and i can work. He also works at home and has lots of down time(he is a commercial RE broker and also dabbling in oil now as a broker) Our biggest problem right now is space. We are renting a 2 BD, DH has the office library downstairs and I have the guest room upstairs which will be babies' room. Our lease is up April 1 so we will most likely be buying a house that fits our needs better

We use salesforce as wellChat Icon unfortunately most of my territory is NY and I do a lot of face to face meetings with national ad agencies. We also work on very strong base salaries and then nice commissions, so we do have to work...definitely nice and somewhat cushy, but they do expect you to earn your keep , bc we do in fact make a good base...The nursery will be right by what my office would be, so I'm now thinking that if I do in fact work from home I would get someone to help out for a few hours, it can't hurtChat Icon

Re: Anyone working from home?

On the days I feel REALLY bad thanks to the m/s, I work from home. I would say my work productivity those days are about 10% versus 100% if I were in the office.

I can't imagine having a baby and trying to work from home -- I am pretty sure they would fire me. Chat Icon

I hear ya. My company does check activity but I tend to send out 25 e-mails a day to cold leads. I meet or exceed my goals. Thats all they can ask for in most casesChat Icon
