Do you get an ultrasound at every doc visit?

I know you see the doctor every month (I booked the next 3 appointments already). I was just curious if you got an ultrasound at every visit.

That's it?!?!? I'm going to have to call my insurance company tomorrow.

I'm double insured. I wonder if I'll be able to get more ultrasounds. I doubt it. I don't think insurance companies work that way.

I do; but it depends on your OB
i mean, he doesnt do anything in depth, but yes, at every appt. I get to see the little peanut

I am 17 weeks and I've had about 5 or 6 including ultrascreen

Re: Do you get an ultrasound at every doc visit?

It really depends on the practice...some are more conservative than others in terms of number of sonos. I have also heard it depends on the insurance in some cases, although not in my case. It is also depends on any issues the mom or baby may have - some women are monitored more closely based on how they conceived or if any issues popped up.

My doc is of the belief that less is more. I had one at 8 weeks, 13 weeks (ultrascreen), and 18 weeks (level II). It will likely be it for me, unless I continue to not gain any weight and they want to check on Chat Icon

An ultrascreen (also referred to as first trimester screening or nuchal translucency) is a genetic test that helps identify markers for Down Syndrome and Trisomy. The doc/tech measures the fold in the back of the baby's neck and combines this sono info with bloodwork to give you a ratio of your potential for DS and trisomy (ie 1 out of X). It is not a diagnosis of such issue, but if your numbers are higher risk (at my OB practice it's 1:270 or less) they may recommend having an amnio or other more invasive test to more definitely determine your risk. This test is optional of course, as well as any additional more invasive test. The ultrascreen is performed in the first trimester - usually around 12 weeks - and before 13w, 6d.

An ultrascreen is often later combined (or "integrated" as it's called at my practice) with a triple screen or quad screen test, to give a few more percentage points of accuracy in terms of identifying birth defects. This is a simple blood test, typically given around 16 weeks.

A level II is a more in-depth sono that is performed typically between 18-22 weeks. A gazillion measurements are taken to ensure baby is growing properly, and the chambers of the heart, brain, etc. are closely looked at. Many also find out the sex at this sono if they want to know.

Hope this helps!

Very helpful! Thank you!

I was wondering what all these girls were talking about when they were going to their Level II's.

I don't. I had them at 9w, 12w & 20w. The next one is at 32w which i think is the growth sono.

Re: Do you get an ultrasound at every doc visit?

I don't have them at every appt. So far I have had one at 8 weeks and 12 weeks for the ultrascreen and I'll have one next week (20 weeks) for the level II.

At the other appts, it has just been weight, blood pressure, urine sample and doppler (for the heartbeat) and any questions the Dr. or I have. Those appts. take about 15 minutes.

I did with my last PG, but I had some issues that had to be monitored. I think I had 14 sonos total. My Drs office had to fight the insurance to get them paid too.

Re: Do you get an ultrasound at every doc visit?

I do have sonograms at every visit..it was ordered by my doctor...right now she is getting so big..it is hard to get a good picture of her..lol..

I think it is up to the doctor whether you get one at every visit or not...
I'm also a high-risk pregnancy...so I have growth scans every month until sept. when I'm due.

Re: Do you get an ultrasound at every doc visit?

I think it depends on your OB. In the early stages of my pregnancy, I had one every week from week 5-8 since I was seeing an RE. My first OB visit, I didn't get one. I only get 2 my entire pregnancy, my ultrascreen which I just had at 12 weeks, and the next one will be my Level II in September when I'm 20 weeks.

Re: Do you get an ultrasound at every doc visit?

It depends on your doctor and your insurance. Some people only get one sonogram during the pregnancy. I had one at 7/8 weeks, 11 weeks b/c of a bleeding scare, 13 weeks for the NT scan and 16 weeks for a full anatomy scan. My next one, which is a growth sono, isn't until around 32 or 33 weeks.

During your second trimester, your doctor will probably just listen to the heartbeat with a doppler. Unless there's a medical reason, you really don't need a lot of sonos.

Re: Do you get an ultrasound at every doc visit?

It also depends on your pregnancy. If you have a good Dr they will figure out a way to give you sonos if you request them. All my Drs always have. I am at a high risk multiples clinic right now, I live in SC and I have an IVF pregnancy so not sure if this will help. but here was my schedule so far:

4.5 weeks: IVF doc sono-saw sacs
5.5 weeks: OB/GYN saw HB's
7 weeks: sono
9 weeks: sono
13 weeks: ER sono for bleeding after s e x
15 weeks: sono we asked for because my in-laws were in town
17 weeks: cervical check internal sono-but we asked her to do external too to see the babies and she did
19 weeks: Level 2
22 weeks is my next and that is the fetal echo sono-I'm not surfe if everyone gets this or not but my clinic does this for all Moms of Multiples.

This is pretty much how I am. I also got one at around 9.5 weeks because I had some spotting. At my appointment this week I didn't get one (15.5.weeks). Actually come to think of it, this was the first appointment I didn't have a sono.
