I am surprised to see so many men haven't had it done. I never had a BF who wasn't circumsized (not that I have been around Chat Icon).

We lean towards getting it done but it does scare me.

though my family is European, they have been in America for 3, almost 4 generations

I too am very surprised how many people dont have it done as Goobster said, all of my boyfriends were
I dont think i even saw one that wasnt until i saw it in a picture

I would not do it. The majority of baby boys across the world don't have it done. It seems to be more prevalent in America because of religious or cultural reasons.

It's really an unnecessary surgery.

So DH and I went to the Maternity Orientation talk & tour last night at South Nassau, and the pediatrician who spoke for the first half-hour totally advocated circumcision! He stated that "more and more" boys in this country are getting circumcised, and really twisted facts about deformities and UTI's! DH and I felt it was so unprofessional!

Fair enough, I suspect he had religious views on it - which I totally respect - but those were not what he cited. He emphasized how much this should be done, especially for social reasons!

The conference room was filled with excpectant parents. I hope they do their own research, but he was so convincing.Chat Icon

That sounds VERY unprofessional! I would be the type that would have complained about that talk.

We are not European (well my dad is middle eastern but I don't care to ask my mom is he was or not) but I do not really want to circumcise my son but I left the decision up to DH. He always said no but now that we are actually having a son he said he wants to do some research which I respect.

My husband was born in China. It is not common practice to have it done there so therefore he wasnt. He opted to have it done when he was in High School and it was extremely painful. We will be having our son circumcised.

Im also surprised, Like Goobster said, all my BF were, and didnt know it was so common not to be, I always assumed I would do it, if I had a boy, never heard of any complications, I guess I should research

I agree, all my BF were circumsized and without a doubt my son (if its a boy) will be circumsized. Both sides of our families circumsized boys (not for religious reasons at all). To be honest, it doesn't scare me or my DH at all. Both our families are 1st-3rd generation Americans.

Chat Icon I would have complained about that. To lie about something like that is so unprofessional.

The truth is that circumcision rates are about 50% right now and dropping every year. The American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't recommend the procedure, they say the risks outweigh any potential benefit.

I am first generating Greek American. My boyfriend is straight up multi-generation"American." I let him decide what he wanted to do, if we had a boy, as far as circumcision goes since he's the dad and he "has one" so he would know better than me. We did have a Chat Icon and he was circumcised before we left the hospital.

Re: extremely personal for the European folks!

Me and DH disagree on this one. He is polish and german and not circumcised nor is anyone in his family. Everyone in my family is circumsized. If we have a boy he wont be circumsized and I will have to deal, but if it was my choice he would be. Let's hope for a girl.

Re: extremely personal for the European folks!

DS is but because I have been living in the US for many years and DH wanted to.

If we lived in France where I was born, I would have NEVER agreed to it.

Men are NOT circumsized in France. Kids who are are the joke of their peers.

Yes, it's stupid and it goes back to WWII. German soldiers used to have kids drop their pants to see if they were. If you did, you HAD TO be Jewish.

FYI... DH is Jewish.

Re: extremely personal for the European folks!

I am second generation American and my family hailed from some of the European countries that were mentioned in previous posts. All of the men in my family were circumcised by virtue of our religion - we are Jewish. Not one of them ever had a complaint or a chronic condition stemming from a circumcision which leads me to believe that much of what we read is simply not true. Also, I venture to say that a mohel, whose only job is to perform circumcisions (and give names to Jewish males) would have fewer incidents of issues than surgeons in the males they circumcise. They can do up to 5 procedures a day.

Re: extremely personal for the European folks!

It may seem like an unnecessary procedure to many and I do understand that point of view..

But there are benefits to it as well!! My friend works in a urologists office and lets just say that many many older uncircumsized men end up having it done later in life b/c of chronic uti's and other problems..

I'm not saying that EVERY man will go through this, but it is common. My own grandfather has been through it, he was not circumsized.

We chose to have our son circumsized...and I would never ever put my son through something that I thought would be traumatizing for him and awful....it was over in 5 mins and he never freaked or cried out in pain after it was done. He is perfectly fine.

Re: extremely personal for the European folks!

IMO, if there were so many benefits to circumcision then the whole world would be doing it... I just think if God created us this way, then there is a purpose for everything that we received, why mess with it...

Re: extremely personal for the European folks!

My husband and I are not European but I wanted to answer this one. My husband was born in Hong Kong and is not circumsized. I left the decision up to him and he decided not to circumsize our son. I was 100% on board with it because I didn't feel that circumsicision is required.

I left this decision completely up to DH. And he decided that because he was circumcised, that DS would be too. DS had it done in the hospital, no issues.

We did but thats bc DH insisted on having it done...he is the umpteenth generation American.

To me it just makes things a bit easier for the boys later on life, but the truth is that it is an unnecessary procedure. Not only that, but if you do some research there are many men that suffer from chronic conditions due to circumcision.
