Any suggestions on how to help my kitty??

So I rescued Pedro 6 yrs ago in Far Rockaway (he was a kitten then). When he was about 10-12 mos, we moved to a new apartment (he adjusted well) where we lived for about 5 yrs, until this past week. We have moved to a new apartment and he is having trouble adjusting.

All he wants to do is hide under our bed, which for the past 5 yrs he's never been aloud in our bedroom (as DH doesn't want the hair on the bed, clothes, etc), but has had free reign of the rest of the apt.

We let him sleep in our room the 1st night, but since, we've kept him out of our room but he howls, meows and cries- scratches at the bedroom door and walls outside the bedroom.

ANY suggestions on how to make him more at home??? This is really stressing me b/c I am trying to unpack-keep my 14 mo old son from tormenting the cat as well as keep Pedro content.

TIA.

BTW, DH says "Let's check out shelters" As in get rid of the cat- I cannot get rid of him Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

He will get used to it. He is very lost with his new environment. My kitty was like that when we moved to our new house and was crying everywhere because she missed everything of my old house in which she lived in for 6 1/2 years of her life (she's 9 1/2 now). Give it a few weeks and he will be adjusting but just make sure he has alot of toys and maybe show him his own bed or area to sleep in. Good luck and I hope he adjusts quickly.

I'm sure he'll get used to it. One of my cats LOVES sleeping in boxes. We have THREE Fresh Direct boxes set up for him. one on it's side, another flattened out, as a "floor" and another one on it's side halfway into the first one. When he needs "alone time" he goes in his boxes. Maybe set up some sort of confined space like that and your kitty will take to it.

Good luck!
