Anyone pg with 1st child, and not planning to have a shower?

I go back and forth on this. Anyone not planning to have a shower and if not, can I ask why?

When i was prego with my first.. i didnt want one, i hate being the center of attention.. so i told my dh i didnt want one. My family and friends insisted i should have one and it would be silly for me to go and spend all that money on all the baby needs when others wanted to give us something.

Same for my bridal shower.. didnt want one but they made me have one.

I hear ya. I don't care to be the center of attention, plus I just feel I want the baby to physically be here before we celebrate. But it's mostly the second part and that's paranoia on my end.

I don't like being the center of attention either but my family threw me a shower and I must say DH and I only have to buy formula and diapers for the first year people were very generous and not to mention we had a great time.

When I was pg w/my 1st I went back and forth on this as well. I'm Jewish but DH isn't. My SIL was pg at the same time and I felt his side would be confused if I didn't have one as well...

Lo and behold the "powers that be" decided that I shouldn't go against the Jewish faith b/c my son was born that day (6 wks. early).

It's totally a personal choice. People can always celebrate with you after.

I am not planning on having one... Jews typically don't have showers.

With most of my friends being Jewish-- I have only been to ONE baby shower in my life.

Want to know how that one turned out? The mommy to be ended up in the hospital and stayed on hospital bed rest for the duration of her pregnancy. We all showed up, and the guests of honor never made it. Thankfully, the babies were delivered a month or so later-- and everything turned out ok.

My bro and SIL had one though-- I honestly am not into it.. I would do a small lunch with my close friends and family without gifts though- if people wanted to "celebrate" me and the baby. Doubt that would happen though.

I'm not really sure if I want a shower, though my sister tells me to have one. I don't have too many close female friends and including my Mom, one Aunt, sisters and SILs I would only have about 15-20 people to invite. DH has one female relative and she's crazy, so I doubt she would even come. Sometimes I get sad thinking about it. I suggested a co-ed shower to DH, but he was vehemently opposed. He said men should not have to suffer in those ways.Chat Icon

My friends did a nice co-ed shower. It was really just a big party. They played baby drinking games for the guys (chugging beers out of baby bottles, guess what baby ate with baby food in a diaper, etc), and other fun games. It was about food, fun and just hanging out. And the men didn't have to sit and watch gifts get opened. Everyone just hung around and did what they felt like, since it was in a house. It was very fun!

I'm Jewish as well and I won't be having one, but to be honest. I think its more of a supersitition than anything, and we feed into it! I would love to have a shower, some of my reform friends have had one, I'm more conservative so I won't be having one, but I still want gifts....Chat Icon

I'm Jewish. No shower. We are having a baby naming ceremony in temple and party after she is born in the fall.

Re: Anyone pg with 1st child, and not planning to have a shower?

I'm Jewish but DH is not. This will be a struggle because I do think I want one but my mom will flip out.

Already DH was excited and bought a rubber duckie the other day for the baby. I told my mom and she was really upset and telling me that nothing for the baby can come into the house before the baby.

My birthday is 1 month before my due date so I think I am going to have an early birthday party for myself, and anything that is bought for the baby I will have it immediately brought to my IL's who live 5 minutes away.

I basically want to talk and hang out with my family and friends once more pre-momdom and eat cupcakes.

Same here, I dont like being the center of attention at all! Besides that DH don't want anyone to associate shower and giving gifts, although they wll! We can manage to buy those baby things on our own.

Am contemplating asking my MIL, who's probably gonna want to throw one, not to do so!

I'm also Asian and my side of the family prefer doing the 'Congrats Your Baby Made It Past 1 Month' Party instead. You can't have both! What a dilemma!

Re: Anyone pg with 1st child, and not planning to have a shower?

i'm not having one.. i've gone back and forth over this issue, but i am totally opposed to having a shower where i am the center of attention and folks try to stick ribbons on a paper plate and tie to my head..

then there is also the fact that we just got married in feb and our friends and family were sooooo generous that i felt bad trying to have another party where people would feel pressure to bring gifts..

so then dh and i were going to have a co/ed bowling party/shower so it wouldn't be so much about sit around and watch the pregnant lady. but more so here's an activity we're going to treat our closes friends to.. but that didn't work out because dh tried to invite his entire wedding list to the shower and we wound up arguing over it all the time.. so now we've essentially run out of open weekends between now and when the baby is due, and i'm more interested in going out and buying what we need..

I am Jewish so, no, I will not be having a shower - but I know the girls from work will probably make me one at school

DH is Puerto Rican and his family ALWAYS has family showers - never just women
It's kind of weird because I know they want to do something for me - we'll see what happens

Re: Anyone pg with 1st child, and not planning to have a shower?

I'm completely on the fence about having a shower. I'm Jewish, but DH isn't. Sometimes I think I'd really like to have one, especially since I'm the first of my friends to be pregnant and can't recall ever going to a baby shower. I think it would be fun. At the same time, I'm a little superstitious. I also realize that Jewish people traditionally don't have showers.
