Genetic Counseling?
I went for my 12th week appointment with my OB and besides advising us to get an ultrascreen, she wants me to get gentic testing. Is this normal? Who else has done this?
She said everything looked great with the baby, it's measuring 1 day ahead. I have no family medical history to make me think I need this testing. I did go through IVF, but that was due to endometriosis not other issues.
Just wondering if it's a test more commonly done these days.
TIA!

Re: Genetic Counseling?
We went for Gentic Counseling, but only after we had a 1st baby with anencephaly, and then with this baby, at the AFP testing, it came back with bad results for Trisomy 18.
I would ask your doctor WHY she wants you to go for genetic counseling. I say this because the genetic counselor would have to talk to you about a specific genetic disorder. They are usually a group that is contacted after something is found so they can 'counsel' you on it.
I'll add, when we went to genetic counseling, I had already researched EVERYTHING about what our baby may have had...so they didn't tell me anything I didn't know.
Good luck and if you have any questions, let me know.

Re: Genetic Counseling?
Genetic couseling is always suggested to patients undergoing Fertility treatments....they say there is an increased risk of birth defects after IVF especially if ICSI was involved....I think the % is like 2 so I don't see the need but most doctors suggest it..

Re: Genetic Counseling?
Also, check with your insurance carrier on what they will and will not cover.
I was surprised with a $1K bill 5 months after I had all of the genetic testing done.

Re: Genetic Counseling?
We went to Madonna for my ultrascreen appointment. At the time I made the ultrascreen appointment they made me make a 10 day follow up appointment to get the ultrascreen results plus for genetic counseling.
We just went yesterday for the genetic counseling appointment. They just go over your family medical history and give you your ultrascreen results - a bunch of different statistics based on a number of things such as age etc. We decided we aren't going for any further testing based on the information we obtained from the results we got. It was approx a 30 min appt.

Re: Genetic Counseling?
I went for genetic counseling not genetic testing.
It was suggested that I go because I had some problems after the 12 week ultrascreen.
The counseling was simple - I answered a lot of questions and got to ask a lot of questions, and I got a lot of information regarding the amnio testing.

Re: Genetic Counseling?
The test written on my script are
CF - cystic fibrosis
Fragile X - Fragile X syndrome, or Martin-Bell syndrome
SMA - Spinal Muscular Atrophy
No one in my family has them, so I"m hoping for the best.

Ok, you are just going for genetic testing....we all had to do that. Those are tests they give everyone.
I thought you were talking about counseling. Two different things.

The script from my dr actually reads "genetic counseling". Weird!
