Spinoff to Husbands & First Dr's appt

If your husband went with you to your first doctor's appt, or subsequent appts, how did he react to seeing your doctor give you an exam and a pap smear?

I don't know how my husband would feel, but I'd be concerned how he'd feel. Like maybe it will be really awkward for him to actually see what goes on. My doctor is a male, so I don't know if that makes it worse. KWIM?

Re: Spinoff to Husbands & First Dr's appt

My husband was there when I gave birth to our first child...and watched them doing all those exams.

So after, doing an exam and a pap smear is nothing to him. It's just a medical procedure to him.

Re: Spinoff to Husbands & First Dr's appt

Mine wasn’t around for the first because I *KNEW* there’d be a pap. Then I realized, he’s going to see worse with the labor so hell, might as well get him accustomed to it now. All appts since he’s been on and none involved an internal exam except one. I was bleeding for off and on for three weeks and the doc checked to see if my cervix was closed, etc.

My hubby is a very shy kind of guy. He was sitting behind the doc when she told me drop drawers, hop and spread (my words of course). You could see in his eyes he’s trying to figure a way to handle this without seeming uncomfortable. Then the doc goes on in and my hubby can get a full view but I look over and he’s staring at the opposite wall in the direction of the doctor but not at my Koosh and not at the doc.

He later told me it caught him off guard and he was trying to be calm about it. He’s such a sweetie hahaha

PS: that day was a lady doc, but my normal and regular doc is a guy.. this should be interesting!

He also feels it’s a medical procedure and God knows that he is aware how much *I* hate them, so he is more of moral support for me than worried about what’s going on down there. He understands I don’t want to have my Koosh hanging out for the world to see and no, its not fun having someone play with it if isn’t him. It’s uncomfortable and humiliating for me to know I must let someone play around with me (necessary but not just my first choice) so my hubby sort of feels lucky its not him on the table!

My DH has been with me to every appt so far, but did step out for the pap and internal exam. That was more my decision than his, but I have to tell you that he was relieved! LOL!!!

Not that he won't be seeing much worse soon, but I'll have time to get him used to that....lol

I went to a male dr and mine was with me. At first he thought I was going to a female dr and when he realized it was going to be a man, he was a little upset. But then at the appmt, everything was fine. He was there for the whole exam, including the pap. He was making fun of it later saying "I saw you get pitchforked" lol. He liked the dr and I think ultimately felt comfortable.

It wasn't a big deal at all but maybe it's because he was also there for the internal sonograms I got in the very beginning. I mean, it's not like DH is peeping over the doctor's shoulder or anything like that! Chat Icon He just sits on the other side, up by my head. No biggie...besides, it's nothing he hasn't seen before! DH has been fine with every appointment so far. At my pap smear he left the room but for the 2 internal sonos he was there and seemed comfortable. He looks forward to the appts as much as I do, we love our doctor.

Re: Spinoff to Husbands & First Dr's appt

Thanks ladies for sharing your stories. I think, if/when the time comes Chat Icon , I'll have to prep my DH beforehand.

Although eventually, seeing my doctor give me an internal exam will pale in comparison to the actual delivery. Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to Husbands & First Dr's appt

DH was there for my first sono/pap and i felt really wierd! my obgyn is a female dr, and it's not like it was my 1st pap ever, but i honestly didn't know how DH would react. of course, he reacted his natural, nonchalant, passive way. he didn't say a peep after the exam was over but i def didn't expect him to see me get a pap! ah well, i guess that's just the beginning for him! Re: Spinoff to Husbands & First Dr's appt

The first time DH saw a doc give me an exam was when we were doing IUIs. He grabbed my hand and squeezed it when they opened the speculum. I look at him and said "W T F is YOUR problem? Its my vag that is being spread open like the Red friggin Sea!" He had no issues with another man being down there. It was all a means to an end.

They actually didn't let my husband in right away.

The appt. started with a nurse who brought us both into a small room and asked us a few questions. She explained how the visits are going to work, etc. then I was asked to give a sample of my urine. We went back into the waiting area. A few minutes later I was called into the exam room alone, I was weighed by a nurse, she also checked my urine and my doctor did the PAP. Once that was done they called my husband in the room and a sono was done.

My husband was so happy he missed the PAP, he said he didn't want to see it being done meanwhile it's nothing! Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to Husbands & First Dr's appt

I told my DH what to expect b4 we went. Also at the first appt they did the internal sono so I told him how they do this. I think it was better for him b/c my dr was a woman...it may have freaked him if it was a guy a little more. YET just wait until delivery....

Re: Spinoff to Husbands & First Dr's appt

DH has come with me to all appts that he is able to make. The first one when they do the full exam caught him offguard though lol, to say the least. He said he was ok with it bc he knew it had to be done and the dr was an older lady so he said he was ok with it. He didnt really pay attention to what was going on, he was looking at my face the whole time, and texting me stupid things to make me laugh...Chat Icon

BUT then.... haha. DH and I had a scare and had to go to the ER and the OB that was on call was a YOUNG MALE dr. I usually see women bc im more comfy that way, but good lord, this guy looked younger than DH! DH was NOT ok with it lol. He watched this dr like it was his job to do so! He watched every move he made...it was kinda cute. I love that he is so protective of me Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to Husbands & First Dr's appt

When we went for our first sono and the tech asked me to undress from the waist down and handed me a drape and stepped out of the room- my DH looked at me with horror in his face and said "wait, don't they just, you know, move the big thing over your stomach??" and I had to explain there in the room what a trans-vaginal sonogram was. He went white when I pointed out the probe to him Chat Icon
